Šaľa: Architectural History, Exhibitions and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Šaľa
Šaľa brings together architectural history, exhibitions and cycling routes. If you are looking for a hotel in the city, you can use your travel interests as a starting point: would you like to focus on historic buildings, exhibitions or cycling routes? The places and routes each offer a different focus. Nearby, there is also a reservoir with opportunities for water sports and fishing.
Architectural history from the Manor to the Roľnícky dom
The Renaissance Manor in Šaľa was originally a water castle, probably built on older foundations in the 16th century. It is a faithful copy of the Turzo family palace in Veľká Bytča. Here, architectural history with probably older foundations meets a specific, named architectural model.
The Church of St Margaret of Antioch represents a different era: the Classicist building was constructed from 1828 to 1837 on the site of an older church, which had been built by the 16th century at the latest. It is single-nave, with a straight-ended presbytery and a vaulted dome space. The history of this church site can thus be connected with the development of a later, clearly dated building.
The Roľnícky dom was built in 1730 and is a protected cultural monument. Its wattle-and-daub walls are made of woven willow rods, and the roof is thatched with reeds. These details about its materials make the construction easy to picture and distinguish the house from the larger historic buildings. The Holy Trinity sculpture group, erected in 1895, is also a striking feature of Šaľa’s square.
Exhibitions and insights into the city
A year-round exhibition has been housed at the Dom ľudového bývania in Šaľa since 2009. Another exhibition, “Zo súčasnosti do minulosti” at CVČ Šaľa, explores the history of the city and its immediate surroundings, ranging from recent events to the earliest traces of human life in the area. The two exhibitions have different chronological focuses, from the long history of settlement to the recent past.
The Mestská knižnica Jána Johanidesa offers another way to experience the city. The public library has a general collection of media and is also open to visitors to Šaľa. Together with the exhibitions, it offers insight that is not limited to individual historic buildings.
Cycling routes and activities in the surrounding area
The Vážska cycle route from Horné Zelenice to Šaľa is 36 kilometres long and ends in Šaľa. Within the city, it passes beneath the bridge over the Váh and then runs south along a paved embankment. The Šaľa–Diakovce cycle path is 1,565 metres long and starts in Šaľa on Diakovská Street. The lengths show a clear difference between the two routes: the Vážska cycle route covers 36 kilometres, compared with 1,565 metres for the Šaľa–Diakovce cycle path.
Near Šaľa, there is a reservoir by Kráľová nad Váhom. Visitors can swim, sail, windsurf, water-ski and fish there. Šaľa itself is located in the northern part of the Danubian Lowland. This gives you a clear distinction to consider when planning your trip: historic buildings, exhibitions and cycling routes in Šaľa, or water activities nearby.
