Podhradie: Castle, Nature and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Podhradie
Podhradie lies on the eastern edge of the Považský Inovec mountain range, above the upper reaches of the Slivnica stream. The village combines a striking castle history with trails through the surrounding landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Podhradie, you can plan your stay around whether you mainly want to visit the castle or take longer hikes.
Landscape and Local History
The Vinište Natura 2000 site (SKUEV0021) lies within the cadastral area of Podhradie. It covers 5.80 hectares, has protection level 3 and protects stands of common juniper. As well as the mountain range, a clearly defined protected area is therefore part of the village’s landscape.
Above the former settlement of Hrnovce, from which Podhradie later developed, there is a limestone-dolomite rock formation. A trail branch ran through the cadastral area in the direction of Panská Javorina.
Topoľčiansky Castle and Its Traces
The oldest building phase of Topoľčiansky Castle dates to the third quarter of the 13th century. The tower can still be climbed today. From the top, views open up over the Nitra Valley, the Tríbeč and Vtáčnik mountain ranges, and Považský Inovec.
Several architectural details of the castle chapel have survived: a partially preserved ground-floor room with a Renaissance brick floor, and a window in a massive niche whose lower section has been bricked up. After the owners abandoned the castle in the 18th century, its chapel served as the parish church for the residents of Podhradie. This sequence links the surviving features with the site’s later use.
The village’s history also includes farming, weaving, lime burning and the making of wooden tools. Visible remains of the original fortification and an earthwork survive in nearby Úhrad. From there, you can look out over Topoľčiansky Castle and its surroundings.
From a Short Walk to the Castle to a Longer Hike
An educational trail leads from Podhradie to the castle; the walk takes no more than ten minutes. The Považský Inovec educational trail is quite different: it passes through Podhradie and is self-guided, open year-round and linear in route. It is about 60 kilometres long, including the branches through the villages, and ranges from moderate to difficult. The two trails therefore suit different timeframes and hiking preferences.
A climb to Panská Javorina can begin in Podhradie. First, the blue-marked trail leads through the village, followed by the yellow-marked trail to the Chatová oblasti Dolné Zľavy and on to the Jamka saddle, where it meets a green-marked trail. A 16-metre-high observation tower with three levels stands on Panská Javorina.
The route across the meadows near the settlement of Biela Bukovina has drinking water supplies and a World War II memorial marked along it. Before longer trips, it is advisable to check current trail conditions. This lets you tailor your plans to each section of the route rather than treating the short walk to the castle as equivalent to an extended hike.
