Velčice brings together themes from architectural history, archaeology and nature. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether you are most interested in historical traces or in the landscape and nature trail. Historical traces include the Church of the Holy Trinity, a chapel below Svinec, an early historical hillfort and a glassworks from the 19th century. In the natural landscape, ancient sessile oaks and protected species take centre stage.

Churches and historical traces

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Velčice was probably built at the end of the 13th century. Its frescoes date from the second half of the 15th century. The church and numerous monuments inside it were entered in the state register of immovable cultural monuments in 1965 and 1968. Here, several periods come together in one building: the church’s presumed construction date, the later dating of the frescoes, and the registrations of the church and its monuments.

Below Svinec stands the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the Seven Sorrows of Mary, built between 1740 and 1743. Its furnishings include a polychrome statue of Our Lady of Sorrows and a relic of the Holy Cross, brought from Rome in 1748. Polychrome means that a figure is painted in several colours. The chapel offers a different perspective on the history of the area from the older church: here, the construction period and furnishings take you back to the 18th century.

Hillfort and glassmaking history

The archaeological hillfort on Veľký Tribeč lies within the cadastral areas of Velčice and Kovarce. Its settlement is dated approximately to the 9th to 8th centuries BC. The site features monumental fortification ramparts and the remains of entrance gates. The approximate dating places this archaeological evidence far earlier than the church and the area’s later history, while remaining an estimate.

Huta, above Velčice, offers a different historical perspective. A glassworks was established there in the 1830s, producing mainly hollow glassware: bottles, glasses and measuring vessels in various colours. While the church and chapel focus on buildings and religious furnishings, the glassworks is about production and its wares. These different themes can help you choose between sacred history, archaeology and crafts.

Landscape and nature

Velčice lies in the valley of the Čerešňový potok at the boundary between the Tribeč Mountains and the Žitavská pahorkatina hills. At the Pod cerami site is Velčické cery, a protected natural monument comprising a group of ancient, majestic sessile oaks. Local biodiversity is another feature: the natural landscape of Velčice is home to eight protected plant species and more than 20 protected animal species. Above Velčice, there is also a reservoir and a fallow deer enclosure. These natural features add their own reasons to make the landscape a focus, alongside the architectural and local history.

Nature trail and route planning

The section of the nature trail in Velčice is 1 km long, easy to walk and has a parking area. It includes tourist information, a state-protected cultural monument, a church, a monument, a cemetery, a bus stop and an inn. This section offers both orientation in the landscape and a range of cultural and local points of interest. Check local trail conditions and parking arrangements before setting out.

If you plan to include cycle route 5115, note its course: it leads to Velčice, turns there and continues via Mankovce to Zlatno. Check the route and local markings before departure. Whether you are interested in history, nature or a route, Velčice offers different themes that you can explore according to your interests.
