Dubodiel on Inovec
Dubodiel lies at the northeastern foot of the Považský Inovec range and along the upper reaches of the Inovec stream. Here, the name Inovec refers to two distinct geographical features: the mountain range and the stream. Cycling routes around the mountain, churches and local cultural traditions add to the picture.
Churches and traces of the past
The parish church in Dubodiel is dedicated to the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, the Eucharist. The church is mentioned in writing in 1623 in the Urbarium of the Trenčín estate. The Lourdes Chapel was built in 1904 and is designed in the Pseudo-Gothic style, with Romanesque elements. The dates refer to different things: 1623 is the year the church was mentioned in writing, while 1904 is the year the chapel was built. Behind Dubodiel are the remains of a hillfort with ramparts. The area’s cultural and historical heritage thus ranges from religious buildings to an archaeological site in the town’s surroundings.
Traditional dress and crafts
A distinctive local tradition is Dubodiel’s traditional dress. It was made using home-produced hemp and linen fabric, woollen cloth and sheepskin. It is distinguished by its simplicity and originality. The tradition of wearing the unchanged costume has survived in the town to this day; some older women wear it on feast days. Dubodiel was also known for making straw mats. The traditional dress custom continues today, while straw-mat making was another local craft tradition.
Theatre history and memorial plaque
An amateur theatre was founded in Dubodiel in 1919. After 1923, it regularly staged performances, including at Carnival, Easter, the parish feast and Christmas. This tradition adds a communal form of expression associated with feast days to the area’s tangible cultural heritage. A memorial plaque to Archie M. Lafond is located at house No. 34, next to the municipal office. If you plan to visit it, check its condition on site.
