Krásno: Church Art and Trails on Chríb
Accommodation in Krásno
Krásno combines a Neoclassical parish church with the Chríb archaeological site and views towards the Nitra Valley and the Tribeč Mountains. You can choose different focuses for your stay: architectural and art history, archaeological finds, or outdoor activities. The following places and route descriptions provide concrete starting points.
Parish Church and Architectural History
The Neoclassical Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which still stands today, was built in 1800–1801 after the smaller medieval church next door had been demolished. In 1801, František Xaver Fusch, Bishop of Nitra, consecrated the new parish church. Inside, Prussian vaults shape the space. The altarpiece depicts the motif of the Cross of Christ and was created in 1806 by the Austrian painter Jozef Zanussi. The dates show a clear sequence: construction and consecration were followed five years later by the creation of the altarpiece. This allows the architecture, church history, and artwork to be considered as different aspects of the same parish church.
Chríb Archaeological Site
At Chríb, the focus is on an older layer of history. The archaeological site preserves the foundations of a pre-Romanesque church from the 11th century, which is among Slovakia’s oldest architectural monuments to have survived at least in part. Numerous historical artefacts were found in the medieval cemetery beside the church. These include coins, the oldest of which dates from the 12th century, as well as a bronze corpus of Christ, also from the 12th century. The finds offer a distinct way to explore the site: alongside the foundations of the older church are artefacts from the medieval cemetery. This sets it apart from the Neoclassical architecture and altarpiece in the parish church.
Viewpoint and Trails on Chríb
The archaeological site of the church on Chríb can be reached from the village of Krásno via an unmarked footpath. Bear this in mind when navigating and check the current route before setting out. From the viewpoint by the double cross on Chríb, the view extends west to the central Nitra Valley and Topoľčany, and east to the Tribeč Mountains. A freely accessible viewing telescope is located there. A shelter offers hikers protection from the rain and places to sit. As local facilities may be maintained or changed, check for current information about their use before your visit if needed.
Hiking, Cycling, and Fishing
A hiking route description published on December 26, 2022, passes through the Tribeč area and identifies Krásno, at 185 metres above sea level, as the route’s lowest point. The cycling tour “Bicyklom po severnej časti Tribeča,” published in 2016, follows local roads through Krásno and climbs up to Chríb. The information offers different points of reference: the hiking description identifies the lowest point along the elevation profile, while the cycling tour describes the ride on local roads through the village and the climb to Chríb. Trail conditions and markings may change. Therefore, check the current route before relying on either description.
The village pond is also of interest to travellers who would like to fish. Under the municipal regulation that came into force on April 12, 2023, a valid fishing permit is required. The “catch and release” principle applies: caught fish may not be taken away or kept and must be returned to the water immediately. Before fishing, check the current local regulations and the permits required.
