Kostolné Kračany: Church, Cultural Heritage and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Kostolné Kračany
Kostolné Kračany lies in the central part of the Great Rye Island (Žitný ostrov) on the Danubian Lowland (Podunajská nížina). The village profile brings together the Church of St. Bartholomew, regional religious connections, a protected area, and a marked cycling route. When choosing where to stay, these different themes can help you match your interests in architecture and local history, nature conservation, or cycling with the character of the municipality.
Church of St. Bartholomew
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Bartholomew (Kostol sv. Bartolomeja) is central to the area’s architectural history. It was built in 1819–1820 on the site of an older church, which was already mentioned in the 17th century. György Bartal commissioned the new building in the Classical style with Baroque elements. The church took on its present appearance in 1820. It is listed as an immovable national cultural monument under ÚZPF number 95/1. Above the main altar is a 19th-century painting titled “Ukrižovanie Pána Ježiša” (“The Crucifixion of Jesus”). A stone baptismal font, apparently preserved, stands near the entrance to the present-day church; it is believed to be medieval and is dated to the 13th century.
Religious Significance and Remembrance
For many centuries, Kostolné Kračany was the religious centre of Kračansko. To this day, it remains a place of religious life for the residents of all twelve Kračany settlements. At the entrance to the grounds of the Church of St. Bartholomew is a memorial to those who fell in the Second World War. The Lurdská jaskyňa, a Lourdes grotto, is also located by the church. Together, these connections show that the church is shaped not only by its architectural history but also by its religious and historical role.
Other Traces of Local History
A statue of academic painter Róbert Almási (1948–2018), who was from the municipality, was installed by the municipal building in 2022. The Bossányi family crypt is located in the cemetery area in Amadeho Kračany. Old houses with gabled roofs covered with reeds have also been preserved. These features complement the church-related themes with the biography of a local artist, family history, and traditional residential architecture.
Konopiská Protected Area
The Konopiská protected area covers the cadastral territory of Amadeho Kračany in the municipality of Kostolné Kračany. The area is subject to the fourth level of protection. Alongside local and architectural history, the landscape’s protected status is therefore another aspect to consider when planning your trip.
Baka–Kostolné Kračany Cycling Route
The marked Baka–Kostolné Kračany cycling route is 12,600 metres long, runs over flat terrain, and is suitable for all types of bicycles. Near Gabčíkovo, it connects to the International Danube Cycle Path. Its length, route characteristics, and connection provide cyclists with practical guidance for planning their ride. Signage and route conditions may change; check them before setting out.
