Oľdza: History, Fishing and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Oľdza
Oľdza combines local events, fishing opportunities, local history and regional cuisine. When planning your stay, it may be important whether you want to attend an event, go fishing or explore the history of the town. These different topics give you practical guidance for your trip to Oľdza.
Events and Regional Cuisine
The goulash cooking competition is a recurring local event. It took place in 2021 and was announced for August 1, 2026. The 2021 edition included a cultural program, accompanying attractions and street entertainment. These program items refer to that edition; for later visits, check the current dates and announcements.
Deň detí a rodiny, the Day of Children and Family, is also held regularly in Oľdza. It is a public family and children’s day; the 2026 edition was announced as traditional and open to the public. Together with the goulash cooking competition, it shapes the events calendar in different ways: one is a cooking competition, the other a family day. If you are planning your trip around an event, check the date of the relevant edition.
The cuisine of Oľdza and its microregion combines Hungarian and Slovak culinary traditions. It features high-quality ingredients, traditional recipes refined over generations, and careful, time-consuming preparation. This regional connection adds another perspective on the character of the area alongside its events.
Fishing: Permits and Current Rules
Fishing at the municipal pond in Oľdza is possible with annual, half-year and daily permits. You can obtain all three types at the municipal office during office hours; daily permits are also available from the fisheries warden. When planning a visit to the municipal pond, take into account both the different permit durations and the listed points of sale.
For the municipal lake, the 2025–2026 regulations allow fishing on three days of your choice each week. This permission applies only to the stated regulatory period. Check the current rules before visiting. When planning, it is worth keeping in mind the permit information for the municipal pond and the time-limited weekly rule for the municipal lake, without treating the two as the same.
Nature and Local History
The Lehnice Special Protection Area also includes the cadastral territory of Oľdza. This means the municipality is part of a protected area whose name refers to Lehnice. Its natural heritage sits alongside historical traces spanning several periods.
Oľdza is mentioned as Olgia in 1239 and as Ouga in 1259. The two names come from different years and show the historical forms under which the town has been recorded. Oľdza is also archaeologically significant: finds from prehistory, the Middle Ages and the modern era are associated with the municipal territory.
Named structures include the Prícestná baroková kaplnka, a Baroque wayside chapel. A second municipal belfry stands on the main street and bears the date 1956. Together with the historical place names and archaeological finds, these structures offer a glimpse into different facets of local history.
Plan Your Journey
Oľdza has two bus stops and no railway station. If you plan to travel by public transport, take both into account and check the current connections. This lets you adapt your journey to your travel dates, while the local topics—events, fishing, cuisine or history—shape the focus of your stay.
