Accommodation in Trstená Na Ostrove
Trstená na Ostrove lies in the southern part of Žitný ostrov in the Danube Lowland. Cycling and local history offer two distinct interests to consider when choosing a destination. The municipality can be understood through the International Danube Cycle Route as well as its buildings and memorial sites. If you are looking for a hotel, these highlights can inform your choice of destination; assess specific offers based on their individual details.
Landscape and early local history
In the past, the area around Trstená na Ostrove was covered in marshes, lakes and, above all, reeds. The first written mention of the settlement dates back to 1250, when it was recorded under the name Nadast. The landscape and the name thus offer two historical perspectives: the area's former character adds another topic to the history of its name. Together, these details provide a temporal and geographical framework in which the later buildings and monuments can be set.
Cycling on the Danube Cycle Route
The International Danube Cycle Route passes through the cadastral area of Trstená na Ostrove along the dam of the Gabčíkovo hydroelectric power plant. For cyclists, this route provides a specific geographical connection to the municipality. When planning a stage, you can compare the location with current route information for your ride. The route along the dam gives cycling its own point of reference, while the local history offers other historical themes through individual buildings and memorial sites.
Religious buildings and the village centre
A bell tower stands in the village centre. The chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was built in 1879. On the main road towards Baka stands a stone wayside cross with a relief of the Virgin Mary; it probably dates from the first third of the 19th century. The three religious buildings differ in their location and dating: the tower is defined by its position in the village centre, the chapel by its year of construction, and the cross by its roadside location and probable date. The relief of the Virgin Mary on the cross and the chapel's dedication to Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows give both sites a Marian connection.
Remembrance and the municipal symbol
A memorial column in Trstená na Ostrove was erected in 2011. It commemorates the people who were resettled in 1947–1948. In the cemetery stands a monument erected in 1998 to the victims of the First and Second World Wars. The two sites focus on different historical themes: the column commemorates the resettled people, while the cemetery monument honours the victims of the two world wars.
A group of twelve reed-thatched cottages was built in 1982 and became a distinctive symbol of the municipality. The reeds connect the former landscape with the later municipal symbol, but play a different role in each of these contexts. Landscape and architectural history thus appear as distinct yet related themes.
