Veľké Blahovo: Discover nature and local history
Accommodation in Veľké Blahovo
Veľké Blahovo combines a lowland waterscape with distinctive themes from local history. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether nature, historic buildings or travel connections are especially important for your stay. The old Danube branches and protected areas reveal a different side of the village from the church, wayside chapel and the story of musician Ján Bihari.
Nature and waterscape
Remnants of old Danube branches can be seen in Veľké Blahovo and its cadastral area. Following their course leads to the present-day Danube. The Klátovské rameno National Nature Reserve also extends into the cadastral area. It is considered a representative example of a meandering lowland river with rare aquatic and wetland communities. The reserve covers a total of 306.44 hectares; the fourth and fifth levels of protection apply there.
Habitats along Klátovské rameno include floodplain forests and communities of floating or submerged aquatic plants. Protected bird species include the kingfisher, mute swan and little grebe. Bird sightings may vary depending on the season. The protected area of Plytčiny is also located in the cadastral area of Veľké Blahovo. These different protected areas and habitats offer several specific nature themes to consider when planning your trip, without being treated as a single area.
The Malý Dunaj Water Educational Trail offers another perspective: the Veľké Blahovo Small Hydropower Plant is one of its named stops. At this location, the standing water and the nearby mouth of the Čierna voda are nesting sites for waterbirds. Here, a specific water infrastructure site meets a connection with nature. This distinguishes the stop from the broader description of Klátovské rameno as a river and wetland area.
Church, wayside chapel and local history
The Roman Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity is a Baroque building dating from 1761 and was remodelled in the 20th century. The main altar contains an image of the Most Holy Trinity from 1883. The construction date, later remodelling and dated altarpiece mark different points in the history of the building and its furnishings. The church grounds also contain a family crypt belonging to the Csiba family, with a tombstone.
A wayside chapel stands near the church. This small masonry structure has a triangular floor plan; its semicircular niches contain polychrome images of saints. The description of the chapel draws attention to its shape and colourful images, while the church is defined by its architectural history and main altar. Ján Bihari is also part of the local history: he was born in Veľké Blahovo on 21 October 1764 and was a musician.
Getting there and choosing a hotel
Veľké Blahovo has had a railway station since 1895. Railway line 131 between Bratislava and Dunajská Streda runs through the village. The municipality is also connected by bus and train to the district town of Dunajská Streda and the surrounding municipalities. For regional orientation, the railway line between the two cities is relevant; the bus and train connections mentioned also serve the district town and surrounding municipalities.
If you plan to arrive by bus or train, check the timetables for your specific travel dates and factor the journey from your arrival point into your hotel plans. When choosing where to stay, you can consider nature and local history as travel interests separately from the question of how to get there. This makes it easier to assess Veľké Blahovo based on the themes that actually matter to your trip.
