Krakovany: Manor House, Wine and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Krakovany
Krakovany combines a historic manor house and wine culture with churches, archaeological traces and traditional crafts. This makes it possible to tailor a stay to different interests: you can focus on architectural history, local wine production or the history of lace.
Manor House and Wine Culture
Chateau Krakovany is a historic manor house dating from 1736. Wines from its own production are sampled in the manor house’s historic cellar. The chateau produces wine from grapes grown in its own vineyards and makes it at the manor house. This brings together architectural history, winemaking and wine tasting at the manor house—three perspectives on the same place that can shape the theme of a stay in Krakovany. Check before your trip whether tastings are available.
Churches and Archaeological Traces
The architectural history reveals two distinct church profiles. The Baroque Church of St. Nicholas of Myra in Krakovany was built between 1770 and 1773 on the site of an older church dating from 1702. In Stráže, a district of Krakovany, stands the Gothic Church of St. Gall. The church cemetery contains stone tombstones from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Baroque construction period, the Gothic style and tombstones from two centuries mark different aspects of the area’s history.
Stráže is also home to two richly furnished princely graves of Germanic princes from the Late Roman Imperial period. A burial ground from the Migration Period was discovered at the district’s brickworks. Traces of Neolithic settlements have been found within the municipality of Krakovany. The locations and periods differ: the graves and the discovered burial ground are associated with Stráže, while the Stone Age traces are within the municipality. This archaeological journey spans early settlement traces and finds from later periods.
Crafts and Museum
Lace from Krakovany is made using five bobbins, is colourful and is considered unique worldwide. Lace is made using bobbin lace-making and embroidery. The pieces are presented on various occasions, at exhibitions and abroad. The subject therefore encompasses both the techniques used to make the lace and the different settings in which it is displayed.
The museum in Krakovany has an extensive collection of traditional costumes. It also displays everyday objects that were once used in the garden, in the fields and in the kitchen. Costumes and household objects offer different perspectives: they provide insight into traditional clothing and objects from everyday life in the past. Together with the lace, they enrich Krakovany’s cultural profile with crafts, clothing and everyday history.
Other Local Features
The Holeška stream flows through Krakovany. Stráže is also home to a watermill dating from the 17th century. A waterway and a historic building thus complement the area’s cultural attractions.
