Discover Prasnik: Nature, Rock Formations and Educational Trails
Accommodation in Prasnik
If you are planning a stay in Prasnik, you can tailor your outings to nature, geology and history. Topics include protected rock formations, archaeological sites and educational trails with published route details. For planning, the different circular route lengths are just as useful as the option to visit the geology and fossils exhibition by prior arrangement.
Nature, Geology and Protected Rock Formations
The Čerenec Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Prašník and covers 1.50 ha. It is known for its rich population of the large-flowered pasqueflower (Pulsatilla grandis); the fourth level of nature protection applies there. This means that both a specific protected-area size and a distinctive plant species are the focus within a small area.
The rock formations also differ: Veľká Pec is a protected rock overhang within the cadastral areas of the municipalities of Prašník and Šterusy. Malá Pec is a natural monument featuring a rock arch within the cadastral area of Prašník. The Veľká Pec cave settlement is also a Palaeolithic archaeological site with fossils, including mammoth and cave bear bones. A nature authority notice dated September 24, 2025, lists Veľká Pec Cave among the caves in the Little Carpathians that are freely accessible to the public. Check local conditions before planning a visit.
Educational Trails and Hiking Routes
Two circular routes of different lengths are available for comparison: the Prašník–Čerenec–Tlstá hora–Malá Pec–Veľká Pec–Barónov hrob–Prašník educational trail is 11.0 km long and has an elevation gain of 396 metres. It is suitable for hikers and accessible year-round; walking time is approximately three to four hours. Six stops break up the route. The best starting point is the Prašník municipal office, which is accessible by bus.
The Pustá Ves–Klenová educational trail is a 13.7 km circular route. Slovakia’s first educational trail dedicated to geodiversity bears the route name Pustá Ves–Kras–Drieňový vrch–Trianova dolina–Jaskyňa Klenová–Rozhľadňa Klenová–Kameňolom pod Hrádkom–Pustá Ves. At the Letohrádok stop, you can switch from the Pustá Ves–Klenová educational trail to the other educational trails, Prašník–Barónov hrob and Šterusy–Orlie skaly. As route details may change following redevelopment, check the current signage and local access conditions before setting out.
Archaeological Traces and Cultural Monuments
On Tlstá hora are the remains of a settlement from the Early Iron Age and a later fortified Bratrík camp from the 15th century. Another chapter in the area’s history is connected with Pustá Ves: the former summer house of the von Wattenwyl family stood there and was burned down by retreating German troops. The building has not survived.
Near the centre of Prašník stands a water mill built in the second half of the 19th century and declared a cultural monument in 1984. It is also known locally as Devátnikov mlyn. In the Dúbrava district, the SNP monument has been protected as a cultural monument since 1963. During the annual SNP celebrations, a ceremonial wreath-laying takes place there in honour of the soldiers who fell in the Second World War.
The geology and fossils exhibition in Prašník is open to the public during the municipal office’s opening hours, but only by prior arrangement with the mayor. If you plan to visit, allow for this appointment when planning your day.
Čerenec and Fishing
The Čerenec reservoir was created, among other reasons, to provide opportunities for recreation and fishing. The VN Čerenec water body is a local carp fishing ground covering 38 ha. So, during your stay, you can consider not only hiking routes but also an activity associated with fishing in Prasnik.
