Dettwiller combines cultural and industrial heritage with a weekly market and walking and cycling routes. When planning your visit, you can focus on specific interests: the collection and guided tours at the Maison du Patrimoine, a Sunday morning market visit, or a route with a named destination. The Ried de la Zorn near Dettwiller and the municipal forest in the municipality of Eckartswiller offer different landscape perspectives.

Culture and local history

The Maison du Patrimoine et de la Chaussure is a cultural and heritage site in Dettwiller. More than 150 exhibits are on display at the Maison du Patrimoine. Of these, 80 are in working order for guided tours and are regularly operated during them. The combination of exhibition and demonstration also makes the collection interesting for visitors interested in machinery and technological history. If a guided tour is important to you, check the visiting arrangements before your trip.

The Maison du Patrimoine became a museum following numerous donations of machines and other objects. The Boucherie Will building offers a different perspective on local history: it was built in 1609 as a meeting hall, the place for all public gatherings. Two distinct themes therefore sit side by side—a collection created through donations and a building that served as a public meeting place.

Cycling and hiking

The cycle path from Dettwiller leads in one direction to Saverne and in the other to Hochfelden or Brumath. These named places help you choose your preferred direction. As route conditions can change seasonally, check them before setting off.

A hiking trail marked by the Club Vosgien starts on Rue de la Haute-Montée, passes through the Ried and ends in Steinbourg. This gives you a named starting point, route and destination; for the cycle path, the destinations in the two directions are the main focus. Check the trail markings and maintenance condition locally.

Landscape and weekly market

Former river meanders are visible in the Ried de la Zorn near Dettwiller, including during the dry season in aerial photographs. The municipal forest in the municipality of Eckartswiller lies within the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park. About 50 percent of its area is deciduous forest, mainly beech and oak, and about 50 percent is coniferous forest with Douglas fir, spruce and fir. This gives visitors two different nature experiences: former river meanders in the Ried and an approximately even mix of deciduous and coniferous forest. If you plan to visit the forest, check access during hunting season.

Dettwiller’s weekly market takes place on Sunday mornings from 09:00 to 12:00 in the schoolyard, Cour de l’école, at 37 Rue du Château. It offers handmade goods, cheese, grilled dishes, fruit and vegetables, as well as Asian and Iberian specialities. The selection thus includes both everyday goods and a range of specialities. Individual vendors may vary; check the current market schedule before your trip.
