Dieffenbach-Au-Val: Hiking, Markets and Church Architecture
Accommodation in Dieffenbach-Au-Val
Explore Dieffenbach-Au-Val through a variety of themes: a circular trail introduces visitors to water and wetlands, hikes lead to Château du Frankenbourg and viewpoints, and there is also a farmers’ market in October, a forest trail and a historic church building. When planning your trip, these activities differ mainly in distance, time required, season and visiting conditions.
Water, Forest and Views
The “Ca coule de source” Heritage Trail is a 4.5-kilometre circular route with a cumulative elevation gain of 90 metres. It introduces visitors to water and wetlands; salamanders provide a thematic focus, alongside explanatory panels. If you are interested in these landscape themes, the trail combines exercise with a focused learning experience. Its length and cumulative elevation gain provide two different measures for planning the outing.
The route through the Massif de l’Altenberg offers a different perspective. From there, you can look out over the village, with the ruins of Ortenbourg and Ramstein visible in the background. From the Rocher du Coucou viewpoint, the panorama stretches across the Val de Villé, the Val d’Argent and the Alsatian plain. This offers a choice between views of the village and ruins, and a more expansive vista over valleys and plains.
Hiking Times and Route Profile
The hike to Château du Frankenbourg starts at the Dieffenbach-Au-Val village hall, is marked with a red triangle and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes; the return to Dieffenbach-Au-Val takes about an hour. Unlike the Heritage Trail, for which distance and elevation gain are the main considerations, this hike can be assessed by the approximate walking times to the château and back.
The Parcours sportif is a 1,250-metre forest trail with 15 exercises, including five family exercises and ten sports exercises. While approximate timings are important for the hike to the château, the trail’s length and the distribution of its exercises describe what the Parcours offers. The Sentier de découvertes passes by D’Kapall. Conditions on both routes may change; check the latest trail conditions before your visit.
Farmers’ Market and Tastings
The Buremarik is a farmers’ market in Dieffenbach-Au-Val, held on the second Sunday of October each year. Around 50 producers offer products from mountain farming. The programme includes a mushroom exhibition, rotating themed exhibitions, wooden games for children, wool spinning and basket weaving. Agricultural products, exhibitions and crafts all feature side by side; for a specific trip, it is advisable to check the event date for the relevant October.
At Distillerie Massenez, tastings and tours are subject to different arrangements: free tastings are offered to groups and individuals; guided tours for groups are available by prior arrangement.
Saint-Laurent Parish Church and Its History
The ground floor of the choir tower of Saint-Laurent Parish Church is considered a possible remnant of a recluse’s chapel and is thought to date from the first half of the 14th century. The nave was extended to the west in 1785. These details refer to different parts of the building: the medieval attribution of the choir tower remains uncertain, while the nave extension is dated to 1785.
