Erstein: Industrial Heritage, Museums and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Erstein
Erstein offers different ways to explore its history and surroundings: you can learn about its industrial heritage, church architecture and archaeological finds, or explore hiking trails and nature. The attractions also differ in whether they feature a permanent exhibition, changing themes or a guided tour by reservation.
Industrial history and architecture in Erstein
A striking example of the town’s industrial heritage is the Cité Ouvrière dite “Neye Hisle”. Built between 1884 and 1896, it comprises 17 semi-detached houses constructed to the same design for employees of the Filature de Laine Peignée. Protected features include the workers’ houses’ original façades and roofs, the associated sheds, and surviving wells, ditches, fences and gardens. The site was designated a protected historic monument by decree on 17 February 2014.
The historic walking tour of Erstein passes notable buildings and places in the town centre and is laid out around the Filature de Laine Peignée. The history of the Filature began in 1855. The industrial heritage theme therefore encompasses both the history of the factory and the residential complex built for its employees. Today’s Church of Saint Martin d’Erstein adds to the story of the town’s architecture: it was built in 1859 to plans by architect Antoine Ringeisen, after the earlier place of worship had been destroyed.
Archaeology and temporary exhibitions
The Etappenstall combines a permanent archaeological section with temporary exhibitions. On display are an exceptionally well-preserved Bronze Age well and finds from a Merovingian necropolis. The temporary exhibitions explore local heritage, artistic disciplines and social issues, and feature interactive displays. The permanent archaeological exhibition and the seasonal exhibition themes offer different cultural highlights.
The Musée Würth France Erstein presents temporary exhibitions from the Würth Collection throughout the year. The collection spans artistic movements from the late 19th century to the present day. Guided tours, workshops for different age groups and a varied cultural programme round out the offer; individual events vary. If you are planning a museum visit, check the current exhibition dates and programme. The museum can be reached on the Strasbourg–Basel TER line, with a stop in Erstein. Check the timetable before travelling.
Hiking trails and nature in Erstein
The Circuits des trois forĂŞts are year-round hiking routes through the town and Erstein Forest. They are 6, 12 and 20 kilometres long, open to everyone and present no particular difficulties. The three route lengths give you a clear basis for choosing how far you want to walk. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
The Forêt d’Erstein nature reserve is home to almost 300 plant species, 29 vertebrate species, 44 species of butterflies and dragonflies, and 78 bird species. These figures may change as future surveys are carried out. Free guided tours of the Polder d’Erstein are available by reservation. Check the visiting arrangements in advance, as they may change.
