Hohengœft: Chapel, Goeftberg and Church Architecture
Accommodation in Hohengœft
Hohengœft combines sacred architecture with the Goeftberg. When planning your trip, you can explore architecture and religious tradition as well as the landscape and seasonal nature observations. The buildings bring together different periods; at the Goeftberg, the focus is on its elevation, views and the June note about orchids.
Chapels and churches
The Chapelle de la Croix et de Saint-Wendelin was built in 1772 by local priest Michael Adam, together with the Calvary. Its architectural features include a metal campanile and a bell. A pilgrimage service is held in front of the chapel every year on Whit Monday. Specific event arrangements may vary; if you are planning your visit around the service, check the date and schedule in advance.
The site of the Chapelle de la Croix et de Saint-Wendelin is not accessible by bus. Access is via a farm track or a small paved road; check local conditions before your visit.
The Eglise paroissiale Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue was built in 1867 by Louis Furst, the arrondissement architect. On the eastern front facing the village, the central section is made of dressed sandstone. It features a door dating from 1867 and a circular oculus; above it is a slate-roofed campanile. The church may retain furnishings from the former church, including a baptismal font dating from 1621, statues of Saint Michael and Saint George, a statue of the Immaculate Conception, a statue of Saint Anthony of Padua, and a Pietà group. The campaniles are also distinct: the chapel has a metal campanile with a bell, while the parish church's campanile is roofed with slate.
Goeftberg and nature
The Chapelle Saint-Wendelin is located on the Goeftberg plateau above the village of Hohengœft. The Goeftberg is 397 metres high and offers views of the Basses-Vosges. Numerous orchids can be seen in its meadows in June; their visibility depends on conditions. These nature notes address different planning questions: the elevation and views describe the mountain, while the orchid note points to a seasonal observation in June.
The INPN biodiversity inventory, updated on 12 June 2024, lists Hohengœft among the five municipalities in the Bas-Rhin department included in the ZNIEFF “Collines calcaires du Goeftberg, de l'Altenberg et du Stephansberg”. The other municipalities are Kuttolsheim, Marlenheim, Wasselonne and Nordheim.
Staying overnight at the Goeftberg
La Ferme de Louise is an 18th-century Alsatian farmhouse at the foot of the Goeftberg. Guests can eat there and stay in one of the four guest rooms. If you are considering this accommodation as part of your plans, check the current availability of the guest rooms in advance.
