Huttenheim between cultural heritage and landscape

Huttenheim combines religious art with opportunities to spend time outdoors. This gives you different points of interest to consider when planning your trip: the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Grasweg and the Église Saint-Adelphe offer insights into architectural and art history; at Lac d’Huttenheim, the beach and seasonal leisure activities are among the local attractions. The Sentier découverte: les trésors du Ried is an 11-kilometer hiking trail between cultivated terraces and flood-prone areas.

Religious art and architectural history

Wall paintings and sculpture come together at the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Grasweg. The late-medieval wall paintings depict four scenes: the flight into Egypt, Jesus among the scribes, the birth of the Virgin Mary, and the Dormition. The imagery thus encompasses several subjects, while the statue of the Virgin and Child is a single work. It dates from 1420. The chapel is the oldest fully preserved medieval building in Huttenheim and has been listed in the supplementary register of historic monuments since 2002. The wall paintings, statue, and architectural history can therefore be viewed as different aspects of this site.

The Église Saint-Adelphe has several distinct construction phases. It was built in 1843 to plans by the architect Antoine Ringeisen. An older nave dating from 1750 was converted into the choir; the bell tower dates from 1582. These dates therefore refer to different parts and construction phases, not to a single year of construction. The church also houses an organ built by Michel Stiehr in 1809. Several tomb monuments of local dignitaries can be seen in the Bible garden. Another standalone monument is the calvary cross, dated 1739. It features sandstone statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint John, as well as a cast-iron figure of Christ.

Lake and seasonal swimming

Lac d’Huttenheim covers 2.5 hectares. Its leisure facilities include a sandy beach, a seasonal playground, a volleyball court, a table tennis table, and picnic tables and benches. The options range from spending time on the beach to being active, sitting down, and picnicking. The playground is seasonal, and individual leisure facilities may change. For 2026, supervised swimming was planned in the designated area from mid-June to the end of August. If you are planning to visit the lake at a later date, check swimming times and seasonal facilities in advance.

Hiking between terraces and the Ried landscape

The Sentier découverte: les trésors du Ried is 11 kilometers long. The trail runs between cultivated terraces and flood-prone areas. These landscape features give the route a distinctive character: it connects cultivated terrace areas with places where flooding is a factor. The differences between the lake and the hiking trail are clear when deciding which to choose. With its sandy beach and seasonal leisure activities, Lac d’Huttenheim offers a different focus from the 11-kilometer hike through the described landscapes. You can therefore weigh up whether swimming and the facilities at the lake, or the route and its landscape, should be the focus of your stay.
