Discover Lichtenberg through the Château de Lichtenberg and its various hiking routes. The Château has more than 800 years of history and architectural development behind it. It was successively a lordly residence, a medieval fortress and a garrison; today, it is a cultural and tourist destination. When planning your stay, you can focus on history, architecture, cultural activities or hiking.

History, Architecture and Exhibition

The Château brings together medieval, Gothic, Renaissance, military and contemporary architectural elements. Its architectural development therefore spans more than a single era. Its changing functions also provide a framework for exploring the site: the lordly residence was followed by a fortress and garrison, and today its cultural use takes centre stage.

In 2010, the Château became the Centre d’Interprétation du Patrimoine (CIP), an institution of the Conseil départemental du Bas-Rhin. Its thematic focus is “Heritage and Artistic Creation.” The permanent exhibition “The Château de Lichtenberg, an Everlasting Building Site” explains how the Château has changed over the centuries. It uses models, reconstructions, interactive displays and educational materials. The exhibition content may change over time.

The “Les Médiévales du château de Lichtenberg” also offer a cultural programme. Each edition includes, among other things, treasure hunts, guided tours, craft demonstrations, talks and parade performances. Dates and programmes vary from one edition to another. If you would like to plan your visit around the Médiévales, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Hiking: Two GR53 Stages and a Circular Route

The GR53 long-distance hiking trail has two stages listed around Lichtenberg. The stage from Niederbronn-les-Bains to Lichtenberg is 18.9 kilometres long, with 841 metres of ascent. The stage from Lichtenberg to La Petite Pierre covers 17.2 kilometres and has 406 metres of ascent. The first is therefore listed as both longer and having more ascent. If you are choosing between the two stages, take both figures into account. Also check the trail markings and route conditions locally.

A shorter loop is the “Circuit des fontaines”: the circular route is 7 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours. It follows forest paths and minor roads, passing through hamlets at the foot of the Château de Lichtenberg. Along the way are springs, fountains and washhouses. The hiking options therefore differ not only in distance, but also in their stated duration and the types of paths they follow. Trail conditions may vary; check the current situation before setting out.

More Activities and Practical Planning

A stroller-accessible educational trail runs around the Château. Information panels introduce the history of the village of Lichtenberg, the Château and its natural surroundings. The “À la recherche des sculptures de Johann” treasure hunt is available at the Château; the activity booklet is available at reception for €2. Check whether the booklet is available before your visit.

Throughout the season, the Château cafeteria serves hot and cold drinks as well as sweet and savoury snacks. Light meals are available depending on the season; the offerings may change. Two outdoor terraces offer views of the Northern Vosges. Thus, the on-site offerings include both a place to take a break with drinks or snacks and the view.

The Château can be reached by car and bicycle; travelling by public transport is possible with certain limitations. Check the current timetables when planning your trip. For the hiking routes, stage distances, elevation gain and stated durations provide different points of reference: the GR53 offers two longer stages with specified elevation gain, while the Circuit des fontaines is described as a circular route taking about two hours.
