Matzenheim brings together historic buildings, a religious tradition and Brasserie Matten. When planning your stay, these places and dates offer several different points of interest: Château de Werde, the Saint-Sigismond parish church, a private half-timbered house and Collège Saint-Joseph, as well as Brasserie Matten with its visitor shop.

Château de Werde and religious history

The construction of Château de Werde is attributed to Sigebert III around 1185. The château is in the Woerth district of Matzenheim and has been partially listed as a historic monument since 19 August 1993. The two dates refer to different things: around 1185 is the attributed construction date, while 1993 is the date of its partial listing as a historic monument.

The church in Matzenheim is dedicated to Saint Sigismund. The reliquary containing Saint Sigismund’s skull is housed in the Saint-Sigismond parish church in Matzenheim; in 1995 it was classified as a protected historic object. The dedication and the reliquary are two distinct points of reference: the first describes the church’s dedication, while the protection status applies to the reliquary itself.

Building history in specific details

The private house at 3 route de Strasbourg in the Niederfeld district of Matzenheim is listed as a historic monument. Its door lintel is dated 1624; the building is a half-timbered structure with clay infill over lath. The year refers to the door lintel, while the half-timbering, clay infill and lath describe the construction and materials. This house thus brings together a specific date for a building element and details about its construction.

The main building and chapel of Collège Saint-Joseph in Matzenheim were built in 1869. Compared with the door lintel dated 1624, this gives you two different kinds of historical date: one for a building element and one shared construction year for two buildings.

Moulin de Werde and the Ill

Moulin de Werde was rebuilt in 1575 by the Seebach nobles. The date refers to the mill’s reconstruction. Along with Château de Werde, it is located in the branches of the Ill; this location applies to both buildings. This distinguishes the building history of Moulin de Werde from the shared relationship of the mill and château to the Ill.
