Osthoffen combines historic buildings with hilly countryside and a route for walking and hiking. This brings together a range of considerations when planning a stay: historic architecture, time outdoors and connections to Strasbourg. Which of these perspectives matters most to you depends on whether you want to focus primarily on architectural history, a walking route or transport links as part of your travel plans.

Cultural history in Osthoffen

Château d’Osthoffen is partially listed as a historic monument. The protection covers the façades and roofs of the main building, the fully preserved stair towers, the moats, the terrace and the well. Building phases from the 10th, 16th and 18th centuries are also documented at the château. This span of time gives the building a layered historical context rather than reducing its history to a single construction date.

The present-day Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur Church dates from 1826; the base of its bell tower is Romanesque and dates back to the 13th century. The dates refer to different parts of the structure: the present-day church and the much older tower base. Its rectangular interior, covered by a ceiling, has five window bays.

The present-day synagogue in Osthoffen was built by architect Robert Lévy between 1863 and 1865 on a previously built-up plot. The rectangular building stands on an older cellar and has a round-arched entrance and four window bays. This brings together a 19th-century construction date and an older building element. The synagogue is currently out of use and is used as a storage room. Confirm access before attempting a visit.

Countryside and routes

Osthoffen lies in hilly countryside where vineyards, grain fields, meadows and wooded areas alternate. The town is considered the first village in the Couronne d’Or, the Strasbourg wine-growing area. The changing landscape adds a rural perspective on Osthoffen to the historic buildings.
