Accommodation in Rangen
Rangen lies on the western edge of the Kochersberg and faces this area. The slopes of Goeftberg and Schaeffelberg give the village a commanding position, with sweeping panoramas of the Vosges ridge and the Kochersberg landscape. When planning your trip, landscape and local history offer distinct themes: the views, several calvaries and the history of the settlements.
Landscape and village character
The panoramas offer two perspectives: views of the Vosges ridge and of the Kochersberg landscape. Several calvaries shape the village of Rangen and are of historical, cultural and landscape value. They are as much a part of the village’s character as its position on the slopes of Goeftberg and Schaeffelberg.
History and buildings
In the 19th century, Rangen comprised two clearly separate settlements: the Bourg of Rangen and the hamlet of Mittelkurtz. This historical division identifies two distinct parts of the settlement structure of the time. Mittelkurtz is also associated with a specific building: a washhouse, which the municipality renovated in 2004. Check its condition before your visit.
The nave of the Église Saint-Martin in Rangen was built in 1750 and restored in 1868. The church is listed among the religious heritage attractions of Mossig-Vignoble Tourism; check access before visiting. A remarkable oak also stands near the church, on the boundary with the municipality of Hohengoeft. Its age is estimated at around 150 years.
Trails and views
According to the 2021 planning assessment, no marked hiking trail crosses the municipal area. At the same time, paths and tracks run around Rangen and uphill towards the mobile phone antenna. From there, there is a remarkable view of Haut-Barr and the Vosges hills. The absence of a marked route across the area and the paths around the village are two different points: the first concerns marked hiking trails through the municipal area, while the second describes the course of paths and tracks around Rangen.
If you plan to use these paths, check the signs and trail conditions on site. The paths lead close to the antenna, where the described view of Haut-Barr and the Vosges hills can be seen. The local paths and the view can therefore be considered separately from the calvaries and the historical settlement structure, without confusing them with a marked hiking trail through the municipal area.
