Schwobsheim brings together several themes from the village’s history: the parish church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, with its architecture, art and Baroque organ; a wayside cross on Rue de Sundhouse; and an Alsatian house dating from 1718. A few hundred metres to the east, the Rhine–Rhône Canal runs past, with a cycle path alongside it. This offers a view that ranges from sacred art and historic architecture to cycling by the canal.

Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur: Architecture and Art

The church is documented from 1371 and may have succeeded a place of worship already mentioned in 953. Architecturally, it has a central entrance-tower porch, a nave divided into three bays and a narrower chancel with a square floor plan. A bay is a section of a church interior; the three-bay layout thus defines the nave’s clear structure. The chancel differs in its narrower width and square floor plan.

The choir contains a depiction of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, created by wood sculptor Joseph Saur in 1953. Saint James, patron saint of the parish, was added to the panel painting in 1956. The dates mark different stages in the history of the artwork. The Baroque organ is also listed as a historic monument. A complete restoration was entrusted to Richard Dott of Munster; the organ was dismantled for this purpose in 1994. The panel painting and organ thus represent different aspects of the church’s art and furnishings.

Wayside Cross and Alsatian House

The wayside cross “Christ en croix (B)” is located on Rue de Sundhouse, beside the public road. Sculptor Gabriel Hugel of Sélestat created it in the second half of the 19th century; François Antoine Zumsteeg commissioned it. Its name, location and details about the sculptor and commissioner give the object a specific art-historical context. As a stand-alone work beside the road, it complements the art in the parish church’s choir with a different connection to the village.

Another example of Alsatian architecture is the house at 11 Rue de l’École, dating from 1718. It is listed in the Grand Est region’s cultural heritage inventory because of its wall and ceiling paintings. The farmstead associated with the house comprises a main building with a French-style roof, an outbuilding, a pigsty and a distillery workshop. The different types of buildings show the range of the farmstead, from the main house and outbuildings to spaces for specific tasks.

By the Rhine–Rhône Canal

The Rhine–Rhône Canal runs a few hundred metres east of Schwobsheim. The cycle path alongside the canal has no gradient and presents no particular difficulties; maintenance and weather can affect conditions. This description offers practical guidance on the route’s characteristics when planning a ride. Also take into account the conditions on the day of your visit. Cycling by the canal thus complements the village’s cultural and historical attractions with an outdoor activity.

Flea Market

The festival committee organises the traditional flea market in Schwobsheim’s streets every year. The 2026 event was scheduled for 14 June; that date has now passed. If you are planning a visit at a later date, check the event date announced at the time.
