Discover Steige: Trails, History and Local Delights
Accommodation in Steige
Steige offers several different ways to plan a stay: the history of the cemetery chapel, a longer hike across the heights towards Climont, a puzzle trail through the village, and the artisanal Nusbaumer Distillery. The routes differ considerably in length and format; for the two guided tours, duration and advance booking are important. If you’re looking for a hotel in Steige, first consider whether culture, hiking, a playful discovery or the art of distilling will shape your stay.
The Cemetery Chapel and Church History
Steige’s cemetery chapel is the choir of the former church. It is therefore directly connected to the former church building: demolition of the church began on 8 May 1877. This date marks the start, not the completion, of the demolition. The chapel contains a baptistery dating from the 12th century. A baptistery is a place for baptism; its date adds a specific religious point of reference to the history of the former church.
Guided tours of the cemetery chapel are available for visitors. They last one hour and are arranged in small groups wherever possible. To arrange a time, you can contact Roland Mangin. Please coordinate your visit with him in advance.
Heritage Listing on the Grand’Rue
A baptistery at 67 Grand’Rue was listed as a historic monument by decree on 25 April 1935. The listing connects this site to a specific date and an officially recorded heritage status.
Hiking and Puzzle Trail
“Les hauts de Steige et le Climont” is 12.9 km long and crosses the heights above Steige towards Climont. The “Balade ludique à Steige” covers 2.5 km and is a village trail with discovery stops and puzzles. The two routes therefore differ both in length and format: one focuses on a longer hike across the heights, while the other offers a playful exploration of the village. To choose between them, compare the distances with the type of activity you’re looking for.
The “Balade ludique à Steige” is available in three versions for children aged 4 to 12 and for the whole family. The group’s composition is therefore a practical factor when choosing a route. As the activity format and booklet arrangements may change, check which version is currently available before your visit.
Nusbaumer Distillery
The artisanal Nusbaumer Distillery was founded in 1947. It produces spirits, fruit and herbal liqueurs, as well as gin and whisky; the range may change over time. By reservation, the distillery offers guided tours of about one hour, explaining how spirits, liqueurs and creams are made. If you’re interested in how these products are created, the tour combines the business’s history with an insight into its production processes. As visiting arrangements may change, confirm your appointment in advance.
The tour durations are easy to compare: a visit to the cemetery chapel lasts one hour, while the distillery tour lasts about one hour. The arrangements differ: the distillery requires a reservation, while you can arrange the chapel tour through Roland Mangin. If you plan to include both visits in your stay, arrange each appointment separately.
