Weyersheim can be explored through two distinct interests: the history of individual buildings and the Ried and cultural landscape. Historic landmarks include the Catholic Church of Saint-Michel, the S’Kleenderfel house, and the Place de la mairie. Outdoors, the Ried of Erbsenhuebel and two walking trails offer their own perspectives on the village. When planning your trip, you can weigh whether architectural history or the landscape should be the stronger deciding factor.

Cultural history: church, house, and square

The Catholic Church of Saint-Michel has been listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments since 1930. The choir contains a Baroque high altar with a canopy dating from the mid-18th century. It depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. A canopy is an overhead structure; here, it forms part of the high altar. The date and subject provide a specific art-historical point of reference for this furnishing, while the listing establishes the church’s monument status in historical context.

S’Kleenderfel, at 11 Rue du Petit Village, is the oldest house in the Basse-Zorn; its construction is dated to around 1621. Its archaic construction uses long wooden beams. The corner posts extend continuously from the ground to beneath the roof and rest at their bases on sandstone corner stones. This describes both the vertical construction and the stone bases of the timber posts. The house retains period furniture and interior design. It also illustrates traditional expertise, such as that of the weaver and the blacksmith. The construction, furnishings, and crafts offer different perspectives on S’Kleenderfel: in addition to its approximate age, its construction and the activities passed down through the generations contribute to its cultural profile. Mentioning the weaver and blacksmith also makes traditional craft skills part of the house’s history.

The dates refer to different things: around 1621 to the construction of the house, the mid-18th century to the altar, and 1930 to the listing of Saint-Michel. Together, they distinguish the history of the buildings, the history of their furnishings, and monument status. The Place de la mairie forms the historic core of Rue Baldung Grien and adds a connection to the historic streetscape to the architectural history.

Ried landscape and walking trails

The Ried of Erbsenhuebel near Weyersheim covers 123 hectares and is a ZNIEFF site of ecological, faunal, and floristic interest. While area and ecological classification are the focus here, the walking trails describe specific vegetation and agricultural landscapes.

The «Sentier du verger» walking trail lies on the outskirts of Weyersheim and passes through vegetation typical of the Ried landscape, between woods and orchards. It is 1,550 metres long. The «Entre prairies et vergers» loop starts at the car park at Weyersheim’s southern entrance and passes through high-stem orchards as well as cereal and fodder crops. The information for planning is therefore clearly differentiated: the Sentier du verger is described by its length and vegetation, while the loop is described by its starting point and the crops along the route. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
