Wingen-Sur-Moder: Glass Art and Cultural History
Accommodation in Wingen-Sur-Moder
Wingen-Sur-Moder brings together a rich history of glassmaking and architectural and local heritage. A historical and cultural heritage circular trail is another theme that can shape your travel plans. The individual places and stops tell different chapters of the story, from glass production and church architecture to the design of a cemetery.
Glass Art and the History of Glass
The Musée Lalique focuses on glass art. The museum was founded in Wingen-sur-Moder, the village where René Lalique established his glassworks in 1922. The collection includes jewelry, drawings, and perfume bottles, as well as tableware, chandeliers, radiator mascots, and vases. Here, you can encounter the different forms glass has taken and the ways it has been used.
An interactive table installation demonstrates the manufacturing process using the Bacchantes vase, created in 1927. Short films trace the process from the mold to the finished vase; touching the installation conveys how the material changes. The focus is therefore not only on the finished vessel, but also on its shaping and the material as it is worked.
The local history of glassmaking goes back further. Its early modern expansion began with the Neuhütte and Hochberg glassworks, founded in 1708 and 1715, respectively. Together with the glassworks René Lalique established in the village in 1922, they represent different stages in the history of glass in Wingen-sur-Moder.
Church and Teutsch Cemetery
The parish church of Saint-Félix-de-Cantalice was built in 1914 to plans by the architect Zigan and consecrated on November 21, 1915. The year of construction and the year of consecration are therefore different: one marks the building of the church, the other its consecration. If you are interested in church architecture and local history, these two dates offer a concrete starting point for understanding the building.
The Teutsch Cemetery offers another kind of local heritage. It was probably established around 1875 by Edouard Teutsch. The grave steles are arranged around a small central monument and are all the same size and style. Alongside the architectural history of the parish church, the focus here is on the cemetery’s uniform design.
Plan Your Hike and Journey
The Sentier des verriers is an 8.2-kilometer circular hiking trail classified as a historical and cultural heritage trail. It offers a different way to explore local history than the museum, church, and cemetery, bringing hiking together with a cultural heritage focus. The trail length may change if the route is modified in the future, so check the latest route details before setting out.
Wingen-sur-Moder is also connected to hiking plans in the Northern Vosges by TER. The station is one of the TER stations serving as a starting point for hiking trails in the Northern Vosges from Strasbourg, Sarreguemines, Metz, or Nancy. Check train connections and timetables before your journey so you can plan your trip accordingly.
