Andolsheim brings together church architecture, rural buildings and nature. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Andolsheim, your travel interests can be a good place to start: Would you like to learn about the churches, the agricultural buildings or the landscape and wildlife?

Churches from several building periods

The Lutheran Saint-Georges Church has a choir tower dating from the 13th century, with an eastern window. Its nave was rebuilt around 1650. The Catholic Saint-Georges Church was built between 1882 and 1883. It contains an 18th-century Pietà and seven stained-glass windows installed around 1890. The chronology thus spans from the medieval choir tower to the late 19th-century windows, with the rebuilding of the nave marking another stage. If you would like to see the Pietà or the stained-glass windows, check visitor access in advance.

Half-timbered houses and agricultural buildings

Traditional half-timbered houses can be seen in Andolsheim, many of them restored. Several pink sandstone gateways have been preserved; they mark the entrances to enclosed farmsteads. Tobacco drying sheds recall the local agricultural tobacco-growing culture of the 19th century. Together, these buildings and architectural details offer different insights into traditional forms of housing, farmsteads and tobacco cultivation.

The old dovecote, known as the “Pigeonnier,” also combined several uses. The ground floor contained a bread oven and a laundry room, with a servants’ room on the upper floor and the dovecote above it. This stacked arrangement shows how everyday and agricultural functions came together in the building.

Landscape and nature

The municipal area extends east to Kastenwald State Forest and west to the banks of the Ill. The Blind, a groundwater-fed river, rises within the municipal area. The forest, riverbanks and a spring within the municipal area thus provide different points of interest in the landscape.

A former municipal gravel pit was transformed into the educational pond complex “Mare pédagogique.” The site supports the conservation and enhancement of regionally typical animal and plant species. It thus combines its former use as a gravel pit with a present-day focus on regional biodiversity.
