Accommodation in Berrwiller
Berrwiller offers two easy-to-grasp themes for planning a trip: architectural history and trails through forests and vineyards. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can decide whether to include historic buildings, a hike, or an event in your plans.
Architectural history, from the washhouse to the château
The present-day stone Sainte-Brigide Church was built in 1766, replacing an older wooden church that had fallen into disrepair and become too small. This date places the stone building in the 18th century. The former Sainte-Brigide Church served as the burial place of the Waldner de Freunstein family in the 15th and 16th centuries.
The communal washhouse was built in 1885. Its basins have been preserved, and water still flows into them from a captured spring. This brings together two very different kinds of buildings in the history of the village: a religious building and a facility for communal daily life.
The history of Château de Weckenthal spans several building phases: rebuilt with two towers, it was restored and extended by Anastase de Waldner in 1522. It subsequently had four towers and was surrounded by a triple moat. The surviving remains form an incomplete square of sandstone walls. They do not rise above ground level and are surrounded by a moat.
A specific architectural connection links the château to the presbytery: typical of the 18th century, the presbytery was built in 1730 partly using stones from Château de Weckenthal. This means a single material can be traced across two different buildings in the history of the village.
Circular trail through forests and vineyards
The seven-kilometre circular trail “Sur les hauteurs de Berrwiller” is considered a family-friendly hike with no particular difficulties. It passes through forests and vineyards and offers views of the Vosges, Berrwiller, and the Alsace Plain. Remains from the First World War and beautiful wayside oratories are also among the sights to discover along the trail. The route thus combines scenic views with historical and religious landmarks.
The start and finish are on Route de la Forêt at the entrance to Hartmannswiller. Parking is available 500 metres farther on, at the edge of the forest; check parking options before you travel.
Festivals and hiking events
The annual Berr’Noël includes a Christmas market featuring local producers, craftspeople, and associations. Another way to experience Berrwiller is the winter night hike “Marche Hivernale Nocturne,” which has been held more than once.
The announced 2025 edition of the Humpafascht was to include a Midsummer bonfire with fireworks and a “Marche gourmande,” or culinary walk. The program may vary from one edition to the next.
A 2025 description lists routes of 5, 11, and 21 kilometres for the 47th “Marche Populaire Internationale,” passing through the vineyards and along the eastern slope of Vieil Armand. The three distances offer a clear comparison of route length; the exact event dates vary. If you are planning your trip around an event, check the date and program before booking.
