Gunsbach offers three distinct points of interest for a stay: the Maison Albert Schweitzer, the Maison du Fromage, and walking trails with different themes and time frames. If you are looking for a hotel in Gunsbach, you can plan your visit around whether you are most interested in a biographical exhibition, an interactive look at cheese-making, or a walking route. The places and trails differ in content and duration, giving you concrete reference points for planning your visit.

Maison Albert Schweitzer: life story and ethics

The Maison Albert Schweitzer was inaugurated on 5 April 1929. The museum comprises six rooms and traces Albert Schweitzer’s life from childhood to the time he became well known. This breadth gives the exhibition a biographical arc: the presentation follows several stages of his life. The African section is presented through objects and documents. In this way, alongside the biographical narrative, the exhibition offers a distinct approach through material and written evidence.

The new museum building conveys the ethics of “Respect for Life” and offers visitors an introspective experience. Alongside Schweitzer’s life story, visitors can also reflect on this guiding principle. This sets the experience apart from a purely biographical account and gives the ethical perspective its own place.

Maison du Fromage and Munster cheese

The Maison du Fromage Vallée de Munster opened in Gunsbach in spring 2011. Its museum section presents the making of Munster cheese in a theatrical, playful and interactive way. This is a different approach from the biographical exhibition at the Maison Albert Schweitzer: here, the focus is on a product and how it is made. The visit ends with a tasting of Siaskaas, Munster and Barikaas. As program details may change, check the visit information before planning your trip.

Walking trails with different time frames

La Balade de l'Eau is a signposted educational trail four kilometres long, with a walking time of around two hours. The route follows the Fecht, passes through Gunsbach and leads into the forest. Its length and approximate walking time give you concrete reference points for fitting the trail into your schedule.

The Sentier Albert Schweitzer de Gunsbach is a walking and meditation trail exploring Albert Schweitzer’s ideas, with 16 information panels. It is 920 metres long and takes around 40 minutes. Compared directly, the Balade de l'Eau offers the longer route and takes more time; the Sentier Albert Schweitzer is shorter and focuses on Schweitzer’s ideas. You can therefore choose between a route that follows the Fecht, passes through Gunsbach and leads into the forest, and a themed trail with information panels.

Vallon de Gunsbach and Eglise Saint-Imier

The formation of the Vallon de Gunsbach offers another way of seeing the area: meltwater flowing down from the Vosges peaks shaped the valley. This adds the formation of the landscape to the history of the museums and the themes of the walking trails.

Another historical landmark is the Eglise Saint-Imier. It is a simultaneous church; this arrangement was officially introduced there in June 1751.
