Holtzwihr brings together nature, architectural history and memorial sites. The Sentier Botanique draws attention to plants and waterways; the Mémorial Audie Murphy, the Stèle du Lancaster and the Saint-Martin parish church represent different historical and cultural points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Holtzwihr, these themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.

Nature, forests and water

The 2.7 km Sentier Botanique runs through the Forêt Domaniale de l’Orch and the communal forests of Wickerschwihr and Holtzwihr. It lies within a Natura 2000 area and provides information about the typical plants, trees and shrubs of the Ill’s riparian forests. The nature trail is therefore characterised both by its route through named forests and by its botanical educational purpose.

Along the Sentier Botanique, you can also observe groundwater springs, where the Orch, or Orchbach, rises. From there, it flows first into the Bennwasser and then into the Ill. The trail thus combines information about riparian forests with a hydrological connection that extends from groundwater springs to the Ill.

The Porte du Ried Nature association offers an annual programme of nature talks and excursions, as well as conservation work in natural areas, wildlife observation and environmental education for schoolchildren. The programme combines learning with practical activities related to nature and the environment.

Memorial sites and architectural history

The Mémorial Audie Murphy was inaugurated on 29 January 2000 and is dedicated to Lieutenant Audie Murphy and the soldiers of the US 3rd Infantry Division. The Stèle du Lancaster commemorates a different event: the crash of a British bomber in December 1944. The memorials therefore have distinct purposes: the Mémorial names a person and a division, while the Stèle commemorates a specific event.

The present-day Saint-Martin parish church was built in 1956 by Colmar architect Jean du Cailar, modelled on the Romanesque church in Ottmarsheim. This named model gives the building a specific architectural connection to Ottmarsheim and the Romanesque style.

The dates refer to different events: December 1944 marks the crash, 1956 the construction of the church, and 29 January 2000 the inauguration of the Mémorial. This distinguishes the date of the event, the year of construction and the inauguration date.

Routes and starting points

The starting points of two other routes are specified precisely. The Itinéraire cyclable Holtzwihr-Riedwihr begins in Holtzwihr, behind number 12 Rue de la Choucrouterie. The Sentier de la Martre starts at Holtzwihr’s football stadium, at the northern edge of the village. For orientation, the routes also have different landmarks: the cycle route starts behind a particular house number, while the Sentier de la Martre starts at the stadium on the northern edge of the village. For the Sentier Botanique, by contrast, the key details are its 2.7 km length and its focus on plants and water.
