Illzach: Bédéciné, Roman Traces and the Parcours de l’oiseau
Accommodation in Illzach
Illzach offers some specific starting points for planning a stay: Bédéciné, with a set date in November 2026; the marked Parcours de l’oiseau; and traces of Roman and local history. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether your trip is tied to the festival edition or whether the walking trail, parks and culture are the main focus.
History and culture in Illzach
The parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built in 1936 and inaugurated on February 16, 1936. The Square lapidaire next to the town hall offers another historical connection, with archaeological remains from the Roman period. Looking further back, there is Uruncis: from the 1st to the 5th century, the important Gallo-Roman city recorded in the Itinerarium Antonini stood in the area of Illzach. These are different scales of local history—a specific site with Roman remains and a historic city in the area of Illzach.
The Musée du Phare traces the institution’s history chronologically through archival documents and objects. These include embossed books, educational documents, Braille typewriters, photographs, manuscripts, works by students and teachers, and hearing aids. Written records, devices, and photographic or handwritten evidence sit side by side, bringing different forms to the story.
Bédéciné: a date in November 2026
Bédéciné is an international comic festival in Illzach that brings comics together with the performing arts. The 40th edition takes place on November 14 and 15, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Espace 110 – Centre Culturel d’Illzach. The program includes performances, exhibitions, signing sessions, workshops and live drawing, a youth area, and storytelling events. The lineup may vary from one edition to another. If you are traveling for the festival, check the program for the relevant edition; dates and programs for later editions should be checked separately.
Walking trail, parks and recreational facilities
The Parcours de l’oiseau is a marked circular route of about 15 kilometers, running mostly away from motor traffic. You can join it at any point and walk it in individual sections. This lets you choose between the full loop and a shorter stretch. The route follows the banks of the Ill, the Doller and the Quatelbach, passes through the Mühlenfeld and agricultural land, enters the Roedlen and Kaeppelein woods, and runs through Parc Georges Urbann and Parc de Modenheim. Riverbanks, farmland, woods and parks are thus described as distinct landscape features along the route.
Parc de Modenheim is open to the public and has a large play structure. Espace Liberté has picnic areas with water points, tables and benches, play areas, and facilities for a wide range of sports. The features mentioned serve different purposes: a large play structure at Parc de Modenheim, and picnic, play and sports facilities at Espace Liberté. When planning, you can therefore choose between these places based on the specific activities that interest you.
