Nambsheim combines a long local history with specific topics to consider when planning your trip: church architecture, historical sites along the Rhine, a protected wetland, and a cycling loop. If you are looking for a hotel in Nambsheim, these different highlights can help you decide whether the destination suits your reason for travelling. Are you particularly interested in architectural history, historical connections to the Rhine, or a cycling stage?

Church and Architectural History

The parish church of Saint-Étienne in Nambsheim is documented as early as 1302. Its choir may date from the 14th century. Later alterations are precisely dated: in 1832, the building was raised, the windows were enlarged, and the nave was extended westwards. The bell tower porch was built in 1937. This makes it possible to distinguish the different phases of construction without treating the tentative dating of the choir as certain.

The church has a Callinet organ, considered the smallest model built by this organ maker. The parish acquired it in 1842 for 2,400 francs. Another architectural landmark is the gateway to the former seigneurial estate: it dates from the late 16th century and has a round-arched passage, loopholes, and a lean-to roof.

The three stone rest benches, known as the benches of Empress Eugénie, also date from a specific period: 1854. Each has two supports made of pink Vosges sandstone, which hold a seat and a lintel for setting down loads. Peasant women carried these loads on their heads. In 1993, the municipality restored the benches together with the Département.

Historical Connections to the Rhine and Nature

Nambsheim’s historic port was on a former branch of the Rhine and already existed in the 10th century. The name recorded in historical sources is «Namenesheim juxta Rhenum cum portu». A ferry also links the village’s history to the Rhine: it connected the two banks of the Rhine at Nambsheim from 1845 to 1866, again from 1886 to 1914, and once more from 1944 to 1945. These are historical periods of operation, not a current ferry service.

For travellers interested in nature and landscapes, the «Cours et île du Rhin de Village-Neuf à Ottmarsheim» area is another point of interest. It is a protected wetland under the Birds Directive (ZPS), the Habitats Directive (ZSC, SIC, PSIC), and the Ramsar Convention. Nambsheim also lies within the ZNIEFF area of the same name.

Cycling Route and Getting There

The Pilgrimage Tour is an easy 28.89-kilometre cycling loop in Alsace; it is listed as taking three hours. It passes through Nambsheim and Vogelgrun, as well as Agolsheim, before returning to Neuf-Brisach. The tour offers a clearly quantified cycling highlight. If you plan to ride it, check the current route information before setting out, as route details may change.

Nambsheim is served by ComCom Bus, an intermunicipal, on-demand transport service. If you plan to use this service to get there, check the latest operating details in advance. This practical question can then be considered separately from whether you choose Nambsheim mainly for its architectural history, historical connections to the Rhine, or as part of a cycling trip.
