Ostheim offers travelers several distinct points of interest: the Mur des Cigognes, a protected monument; the Catholic Church of Saint-Nicolas, rebuilt in a modern style; and a walking circuit, along with walks in a park outside the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel in Ostheim, first consider whether local history and architecture or time outdoors will shape your trip. The monument, church, walking circuit and walks each appeal to different interests.

The Mur des Cigognes and local history

The Mur des Cigognes is a wall with a stepped gable and is listed as a protected monument in Ostheim. It is one of the few surviving remains of the old village from the period after the battles of the last war. At the same time, it forms part of Ostheim’s war memorial, which was inaugurated on September 6, 1953. The wall brings together its architectural form, the history of the old village and remembrance in a single named place. The term “stepped gable” describes the stepped design at the top of the wall and highlights a specific architectural feature. The two descriptions offer distinct perspectives: “stepped gable” refers to the shape of the wall’s upper edge, while its connection to the war memorial describes its historical context.

Saint-Nicolas and its features

Saint-Nicolas offers a different architectural accent from the wall. The Catholic church was rebuilt in a distinctly modern style and consecrated in May 1960. It houses the more than two-meter-tall statue of Notre-Dame d’Ostheim, carved from lightly tinted limewood. The church also has an organ dating from 1963, made by the Roethinger organ builders of Strasbourg. Its modern style is complemented by specific details about its features: the statue’s height and material are noted, as are the organ’s year of construction and maker. If you are interested in sacred architecture as well as craftsmanship and instruments, Saint-Nicolas offers two different points of interest.

Hiking and walks

There are two different options for spending time outdoors. The Discovery Circuit of Ostheim is a walking trail. Parc de Schoppenwihr offers pleasant walks; it is outside the municipality of Ostheim, 1 km away. The activities and locations therefore differ: the circuit is described as a hiking option, while the park is a destination for walks outside the municipality. When planning your days, you can consider these separately rather than treating a walk in the park and the walking circuit as the same kind of outing.

Planning your journey and stay

Getting there is also part of the decision. Ostheim is served by a regular bus or tram line. If you are planning to use public transport or want to arrive at a set time, check the timetable before your trip and plan your arrival and return journey accordingly. If you are combining several interests, consider that the park is outside the municipality and plan your journey there separately. This keeps your choice of destination focused on your specific travel plans.
