Rappoltsweiler, also known as Ribeauvillé, offers travelers striking castles, historic buildings and a local history closely tied to winegrowing. If you are looking for a hotel in Rappoltsweiler, these themes can help you plan your stay around your interests, whether your focus is on the castles, the Old Town or winegrowing.

Three Castles and Their Distinctive Architectural Styles

Château de Saint-Ulrich is the most imposing and best-preserved of the three castles overlooking Ribeauvillé. Château du Haut-Ribeaupierre combines family history with sweeping views: it is the oldest castle of the Ribeaupierre family, whose existence is documented from 1084. Its imposing round keep offers views across the Alsatian plain and the neighboring mountain ridges.

Château du Girsberg stands out for different architectural features: it has a pentagonal keep and Romanesque, Gothic and possibly Renaissance elements. In medieval architecture, it is considered an outstanding achievement of the 13th century. The three castles can therefore be distinguished by their different features: Saint-Ulrich by its state of preservation, Haut-Ribeaupierre by its documented family history and views, and Girsberg by its architectural forms.

Towers and Church in the Old Town

Ribeauvillé’s historic buildings also tell the story of different periods in the town’s history. Tour des Bouchers is the only fortification tower currently remaining between the Ville Moyenne and the Vieille Ville; most of the former fortifications have disappeared. Tour des Cigognes dates from the 14th century. Stork nests sit on its roofs and are now often occupied.

Église Saint-Grégoire dates from the 13th century and has been listed as a Monument historique since 1994. It is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; access is through the side door. As opening hours may change, check them before your visit. This allows you to include the church, with its specific visiting hours, in your plans, while the towers offer orientation primarily through their respective historic functions and forms.

Winegrowing and Its Themes

The three Grands Crus Geisberg, Kirchberg and Osterberg are grown in Ribeauvillé. The Grands Crus of Ribeauvillé include four grape varieties: Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat d’Alsace.

The Musée de la Vigne et de la Viticulture at the Cave de Ribeauvillé covers various stages of winegrowing: grafting vines, the grape harvest, pressing and winemaking. The museum is open to visitors for several months each year; seasonal opening dates may change. So if you would like to plan a museum visit, check the visiting hours in advance.

Routes and Visitor Information

The Three Castles Trail has a steep climb right from the start and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. The duration depends on conditions and your own pace. This information is useful for planning your day if the castles are your main focus: be prepared for the climb from the outset and check the latest route information before setting off.

For exploring the town, the “Ribeauvillé” mobile app has a section for a guided tour. It also includes a complete walking tour of the town, supplemented with photos. The guided tour and the walking tour are described as separate offerings within the app. As their digital availability may change, check before relying on the app for your plans.

Whether your interests lie more in medieval architecture, the Old Town’s towers or winegrowing, Rappoltsweiler can be explored through these different themes.
