Rouffach: History, Views and Nature
Accommodation in Rouffach
When looking for a hotel in Rouffach, start by considering the focus of your stay: historic buildings and a city walk offer a glimpse into the town’s history, while a scenic promenade, nature watching, markets and an annual event provide other ways to explore.
Trails, views and nature
The Promenade des Grand Cru Vorbourg climbs above Rouffach and leads to a viewing terrace overlooking the town. From there, you can see Rouffach and, in particular, its medieval historic landmarks; at the same time, there are expansive views south across the surrounding landscape. This makes the promenade a good choice if you would like a walk that takes in both the town and its natural surroundings.
The landscape of the Réserve naturelle des Collines de Rouffach is dominated by dry grassland that was once largely used for grazing. The nature reserve contains the largest continuous area of Xerobrometum in Alsace. Of the 274 recorded plant species, 38 are endangered in Alsace; the fauna also comprises 468 species. These inventory figures may change as recording continues.
At the Parc à cigognes, you can watch storks in an enclosure along the town-walls trail throughout the year. If you plan to visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance, as they may change.
Architecture and town history
Classified as a historic monument, the Tour des Sorcières is the only surviving tower in Rouffach and is attached to the former town hall. Its ground plan is round at the bottom and square at the top. Notre-Dame de l’Assomption also offers an insight into the history of architecture: the church is in the Romanesque-Gothic style and reflects the development of religious architecture from the 11th to the 19th century. A rose window sits above its sculpted portal.
The Rouffach Bailiwick Museum is on the first floor of a former 16th-century granary, designated a historic monument in 1921. Its exhibits explore the history of Haut-Mundat: they include treasures from the bailiwick, whose former capital was Rouffach, as well as from the villages that once belonged to it.
Walking tour and puzzle
The historic town walk focuses on Rouffach’s history. An information leaflet is available from the tourist office; free guided tours are offered in summer, and group tours can be arranged by prior reservation. As tour offerings may change, check the current dates before making plans.
Another way to explore the Renaissance lanes is the “Balade ludique à Rouffach”: questions and clues guide you through solving a puzzle. This family activity is available in three versions for children aged 4 to 12 and the whole family. You can choose between a history-focused walking tour and a playful puzzle trail.
Markets and event
The Organic Market is an outdoor market featuring local and organic produce, including bread, cheese, fruit, vegetables and meat. The weekly market is also held outdoors and offers regional produce as well as prepared foods; the products listed also include bread, cheese, fruit, vegetables and meat. The main difference, then, is the offering described: the weekly market also includes ready-to-eat foods. Market information may change, so check the latest dates and offerings in advance.
A highlight that returns every year is the Fête de la Sorcière. During the event, Rouffach becomes an open-air theater featuring local traditions, events, performances, costumes and a convivial atmosphere. The program varies from year to year, so check the dates and program for your travel period.
