Village-Neuf lies on the Rhine, where the Grand Canal d’Alsace begins. The town combines a riverside location with the Petite Camargue Alsacienne nature reserve, activities on the water and cultural offerings. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay on trails and nature watching, water sports or culture. Its location between Basel and Lörrach adds a clear sense of place to these points of interest.

Nature on the Rhine and Canal

The Petite Camargue Alsacienne nature reserve is part of the protected natural surroundings of Village-Neuf, and the town is one of the reserve’s member municipalities. The landscape is a mosaic: softwood willow thickets line the banks of the Rhine, while hardwood oak forests grow on the river embankments; there are also dry grasslands, wet meadows, reed beds and marshes. Dry and wet habitats, as well as woodland and riverside vegetation, are found side by side. Individual visitors can use the reserve’s trails and observation points free of charge, provided they follow the reserve’s rules.

Trails and Water Activities

For an activity on land, the Ecol’o Canal educational trail runs along the Huningue Canal and is open to pedestrians only. On the Rhine in Village-Neuf, the Base Nautique des 3 Frontières offers motorboating, water skiing, wakeboarding and sailing. A canal-side educational trail and several water sports therefore offer distinct ways to spend your time. VitaRhin adds another option: a free, open-to-all venue with a wide range of activities for sport, relaxation and discovery.

History and Culture

Village-Neuf was founded in 1684 by royal ordinance on a former island in the Rhine. The Saint-Nicolas parish church is a neo-Gothic building constructed from 1902 to 1907. RiveRhin offers a different cultural focus: this multidisciplinary cultural venue presents theatre, concerts, unusual performances and a children’s film club. The biennial street arts festival Festi’Neuf adds to these offerings. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates in advance.

Asparagus and Regional Cuisine

Asparagus from Village-Neuf is a local spring specialty grown by local producers; both white and green asparagus are available. The Confrérie des Asperges was founded in 1986 to promote white asparagus and preserve the gastronomic tradition of the border region, including, in particular, that of Village-Neuf’s restaurants. Asparagus is therefore part of both local production and regional food culture. Its focus on spring gives this specialty a clear seasonal place.

Location and Getting Around

Basel is about 3 kilometres from Village-Neuf, while Lörrach is less than 10 kilometres away. The A35 and A5 motorways, Basel-Mulhouse Airport, the Basel–Strasbourg railway line and the Rhine port of Huningue are also nearby. The distances to the two cities and the various transport links offer different reference points for planning your trip.
