Zimmersheim: History, half-timbered houses and rural paths
Accommodation in Zimmersheim
When choosing a place to stay, Zimmersheim offers two distinct themes: signposted walking paths in a rural setting, and traces of buildings and settlement from different periods. The details range from a church with several building phases to archaeological evidence reaching far back into the past.
Paths and rural landscapes
Zimmersheim has numerous signposted walking paths. The landscape is characterised by farmland, orchards, wooded areas and hedgerows. Together, these features describe a rural setting of open agricultural land and areas of vegetation. The landscape also provides a habitat for a diverse bird population. If you value outdoor activities and connections with nature when choosing a destination, the signposted paths and birdlife are two concrete aspects that reflect the character of the place.
Orienteering and practical planning
One specific activity is the night orienteering event “Marche d’orientation de nuit” in Zimmersheim. It includes several routes ranging from 3 to 8 km. The shortest and longest distances are five kilometres apart, making it easy to compare the options by route length. After the orienteering event, lentil soup with sausage or vegetable soup with sausage may be available by reservation. Before your trip, check the event date and reservation details so you can plan for this event specifically.
The village’s architectural history
The Église paroissiale de l’Assomption preserves the two lower storeys of the former choir tower, which bears the date 1487. Reconstruction of the nave began in 1786. The two dates refer to different parts and events: 1487 is marked on the former choir tower, while 1786 marks the start of the nave’s reconstruction. The nave is the main space of the church; the choir tower is associated with the choir area. This makes it possible to distinguish the surviving tower storeys from the later building phase of the nave, both chronologically and architecturally.
Civic buildings also offer insight into Zimmersheim’s architecture. The Maison de Vigneron at 1 place du Général de Gaulle has a stone ground floor and a half-timbered upper floor. The change in construction methods is a clear feature of the house: stone below, half-timbering above. At 1 rue de l’École, a farm includes a former gypsum mill. This former mill adds an industrial aspect to the building history alongside the church and the residence.
Historical traces from prehistory to Roman times
The hills around Zimmersheim preserve traces of settlement by Upper Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers. These include a hearth at “Lotissement Clauser II”. The “Hausleplatz” site is associated with settlement by farmers in the Early Neolithic. The two findings highlight different aspects: here, traces of Upper Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers are contrasted with a settlement associated with early farmers. This comparison shows that the surviving evidence is not limited to a single period or way of life.
At Bifang, a Carolingian necropolis is located at the entrance to the “Les verts coteaux” housing development. Another historical trace is the Roman road between Bruebach and Rixheim, which runs through Zimmersheim. It is a different type of evidence from the necropolis and settlement sites: rather than describing a single findspot, it traces a road between two places that passes through Zimmersheim.
