Dordogne: Prehistory, Landscapes and Culture

Around thirty decorated caves and more than 150 Palaeolithic sites are part of the Vézère Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Dordogne. Together with historic towns, river valleys and regional produce, they make this a destination with a range of highlights, from prehistoric art to outdoor activities. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding which themes matter most to you rather than focusing on just one attraction as your benchmark.

Prehistoric heritage and cave visits

The Vézère Valley comprises 15 prehistoric sites that document dense settlement during the Palaeolithic. The World Heritage Site also includes more than 150 Palaeolithic sites and around thirty decorated caves. The paintings at Lascaux depict around a hundred animal figures. Archaeological evidence and cave art therefore represent distinct aspects of prehistoric history.

Access to some caves is controlled because they are fragile; others are closed to the public. Check the access rules for each site before your visit. To explore prehistory in greater depth, the Musée national de Préhistoire in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac traces human development through tools, sculptures and prehistoric art objects. The Centre International de l’Art Pariétal presents an almost 150-metre-long gallery with around 2,500 painted or engraved animal figures.

Towns, bastides and historic buildings

Périgueux, Bergerac and Sarlat have been awarded the Villes d’Art et d’Histoire designation. The region’s urban heritage is part of a broader collection: Dordogne-Périgord has more than 190 listed or classified sites and monuments, as well as 1,001 châteaux from different historical periods. Monpazier is one of the best-preserved bastides in south-west France; its main square is lined with arcades. The Château de Beynac-et-Cazenac is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky cliff.

The region’s heritage is complemented by around fifty museums and about forty parks and gardens in Dordogne-Périgord. These figures may change. The range means you need not limit your visits to a single period or type of building: prehistoric collections, urban history, bastides and fortresses offer different points of interest.

River valleys and natural areas

Forests, rivers and rural areas rich in nature shape the Dordogne. The Dordogne Valley basin is designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In 2020, the Vézère Valley was awarded Grand Site de France status. The Dordogne Valley between Sarlat and Bergerac brings together prehistoric caves, vineyards and medieval bastides.

Natural habitats include heathland and grasslands with Mediterranean influences, wetlands and mixed forests. The Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park also offers protected landscapes with diverse wildlife and plant life. The Auvézère gorges are considered wild. In Brantôme, the Dronne flows through the canals. These examples illustrate different landscapes and river environments, which need not resemble one another.

Activities and regional experiences

The Flow Vélo is a family-friendly and safe cycling route along a greenway. Check route conditions and services before setting out. Accueil Vélo locations give cyclists special attention; check which services are participating before your trip. Canoeing is also one of the outdoor activities available in Dordogne-Périgord. Options may vary by provider and season.

Regional cuisine includes truffles, foie gras, confit, magret, walnuts, porcini mushrooms, strawberries, apples and chestnuts, as well as wines from Bergerac. The availability of seasonal produce varies. Farmers’ markets offer the opportunity to find local products; dates depend on the location and season. Events take place throughout the year and include festivals, exhibitions, performances, celebrations and sporting events. As programmes change from year to year, check dates for your travel period.
