Routes through landscapes and history

The Véloroute de la Vallée du Dropt runs for 89 kilometres through rolling hills and picturesque villages. Depending on the season, plum orchards, sunflowers and vineyards shape the landscape. Along the way, the route passes medieval bastides, châteaux, villages full of character and former watermills. In the Lot Valley, meanwhile, landscapes with a Périgord character go hand in hand with opportunities to visit châteaux and bastides. The gently rolling Coteaux de Gascogne are known as the “French Tuscany.”

The region can also be explored on foot along a wide variety of routes. The département offers 4,870 kilometres of marked trails, 450 circular walking routes, five long-distance GR trails and 49 Terra-Aventura routes. The GR 654 crosses Lot Et Garonne for just under 150 kilometres, through valleys and orchards; the GR 652 covers just under 130 kilometres here. The Cluniac Way, a cultural walking route, runs for around 100 kilometres through 16 municipalities. In the Landes forest, pine-scented paths invite families to go hiking.

Nature and activities along the way

As of 15 August 2026, there are 14 Natura 2000 sites spread across 121 municipalities. Digital information panels about these sites are available to the public, hikers and nature enthusiasts. If you enjoy combining different activities, the département has tourist infrastructure for hiking, cycling, horse riding and boating; four equestrian routes cross the area.

The Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo runs for 87 kilometres through Lot Et Garonne and includes a family-friendly greenway section. The greenway is reserved for non-motorised vehicles. Luggage transfer is available along the canal; check availability for your travel dates and local conditions before setting off. By comparison, the Vallée du Lot à Vélo combines low-traffic side roads with sections on a greenway. Within the département, it runs for 86 kilometres as far as Fumel. Aiguillon is the designated starting point; if arriving from the Canal des 2 Mers, the route begins in Damazan/Villeton. The Clairac–Aiguillon stage links the Canal route with the Vallée du Lot à Vélo.

Other cycling routes offer different highlights: the Scandibérique runs for approximately 90 kilometres through Lot Et Garonne, between the Buzet and Armagnac wine-growing areas. The Voie Verte de la Vallée de la Baïse runs for 27 kilometres through six municipalities. Check local conditions before riding this route.

For a scenic break, two different places are worth considering: Pech-de-Berre offers views of the Lot and Garonne rivers and has a picnic area and bus parking. As facilities may change, check conditions before your visit. The Coteau de l’Ermitage viewpoint offers views over Agen and lies along the GR 652 route.

Bastides, museums and special places

Monflanquin, Pujols and Villeréal are among the three Plus Beaux Villages de France in the département. There are 42 bastides and 95 châteaux listed as historic monuments. Mills and museums also shape the cultural landscape: of the 535 mills, 22 are open to the public through Adam 47. The museum offering comprises 37 venues, including six Musées de France open year-round and 31 association-run or private museums that open in summer.

In Nérac stands the Château-musée Henri IV, built by Alain d’Albret in the 15th century. From 1577 to 1582, it was the main residence of the future Henri IV and Marguerite de Valois. Another striking work of art is found in the church of Mas-d’Agenais: a crucifixion attributed to Rembrandt is on permanent display there. This allows visitors to discover the connections between architectural history, local history and art in different parts of the département.

Local flavours and choosing a hotel

The culinary scene is also varied. The geographical area for Pruneaux d’Agen covers the entire département except for the canton of Houeilles. Armagnac and Floc de Gascogne are two spirits with AOC status. At La Maison Roucadil, a guided visit explains how plums are processed and includes a tasting. As the offering may change, check the latest information in advance.

Museum opening times also vary: six Musées de France are open year-round, while 31 association-run or private museums open in summer. Route lengths, landscapes and seasonal cultural offerings give you practical points of reference for planning your time in Lot Et Garonne.
