Pyrénées-Atlantiques: Culture, cheese and Pyrenean trails
Accommodation in Pyrénées-Atlantiques
Pyrénées-Atlantiques brings together Basque and Béarnais identities with Pyrenean traditions, as well as Spanish and Atlantic influences. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: archaeological heritage and architecture, trails through the countryside, or regional cheese traditions. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, first consider which of these themes you want to shape your days.
Basque, Béarn and a layered cultural heritage
Local festivals and village celebrations showcase Basque and Béarnais languages, music, dances, costumes, bandas and folk groups. Each event is different, so if you want to include a festival in your plans, it is worth checking the dates and programme. The architecture also offers different points of interest: regional styles include English villas with exotic influences, Art Deco buildings, Basque etxe houses, Béarnais architecture and mountain villages on hillsides.
The département’s pilgrimage heritage includes Cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne, Porte Saint Jacques in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the Romanesque church of L’Hôpital-Saint-Blaise and Cathédrale Sainte-Marie d’Oloron. These sites were listed in 1998 as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.” Another way to explore architectural history is through the 15 bastides highlighted by Bastides 64 in Béarn and the Basque Country.
Five villages in the département bear the Plus beaux villages de France label: Navarrenx, Ainhoa, La Bastide-Clairence, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and Sare. As awards can change, check their current status before planning a visit. Nearly 280 archaeological sites have been recorded, mainly in the Vallée d’Aspe and the Vallée d’Ossau. The archaeological heritage of Parc national des Pyrénées includes, among others, Bious-Artigues, Anéou, Troumouse, Liantran and Maspêtre near Borce in the Vallée d’Aspe. Interpretation and access may be regulated; check the conditions before planning a visit to a specific site.
Museums, Terra Aventura treasure hunts and guided street-art tours in Bayonne are also among the experiences on offer. The cultural selection therefore ranges from historic sites and architecture to activities focused on a particular theme or city walk.
Nature spots and trails for different kinds of outings
Parc national des Pyrénées spans six valleys in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrénées départements. It is considered rich in natural, cultural and scenic sites, as well as flora, fauna and endemic species. The département’s Espaces naturels sensibles are intended to introduce the public to natural riches and enable cultural, scientific or landscape interpretation.
For a multi-stage mountain hike, the Sentier de Camille is a marked, 104-kilometre circular route with six stages. One stage is at Refuge d’Arlet in the Vallée d’Aspe. Compare this multi-day trail with the hike from Gourette: this challenging high-mountain loop visits the four lakes of Louesque, Uzious, Lavedan and Anglas in a single day. The two hikes therefore differ clearly in how much time they take. Check mountain conditions before setting off, and also check access to Refuge d’Arlet if you are hiking the Sentier de Camille.
The Vélosud offers a different perspective: its section in the département covers 188 kilometres and follows the Gave de Pau and the Gaves réunis to the Adour. At the start, the route runs for around ten kilometres through the countryside along the Gave de Pau, on paths shared by pedestrians and cyclists. You can reach the section near Pau from the A64 or by TER; bicycles are permitted on the rail network. As traffic regulations and road conditions can change, check the information before setting off.
From the opposite riverbank, a branch of the Vélosud leads over a footbridge to Base de loisirs de Baudreix; the round trip is around 500 metres. Base de loisirs de Baudreix offers a picnic area, camping, swimming and a restaurant. Check the latest details, as information about leisure facilities can change. Paddleboarding and pedal-boat trips are also available on Lac de Fabrèges. Take the season and weather into account there.
Ossau-Iraty and regional food trails
Ossau-Iraty AOP is made from whole milk from three local sheep breeds: Manech Tête Noire, Manech Tête Rousse and Basco-Béarnaise. The production area stretches from the Côte Basque to Haut Béarn and includes Labourd, Basse Navarre, Soule, Béarn des gaves, Ossau, Aspe and Barétous. The cheese-making tradition thus extends across several landscapes and cultural areas rather than being limited to one place.
The Route du Fromage Ossau-Iraty comprises 129 stops in the Basque Country and Béarn and can be explored by car, bicycle or on foot. Access to individual producers and their opening hours may vary. If a visit to a producer is part of your plans, check the details in advance. This lets you choose between a themed discovery tour and a stay focused on architecture, culture or mountain trails.
