Auvergne: Volcanoes, Hiking Trails and Cheese Culture
Accommodation in Auvergne
Auvergne reveals itself through striking volcanic landscapes, long hiking trails and experiences centered on cheesemaking. The Chaîne des Puys–Limagne Fault UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the Limagne Fault, the aligned volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys and the inverted relief of Montagne de la Serre. The Cézallier forms a distinct landscape of its own: a vast, inhabited plateau between the Sancy Massif and the Cantal Mountains, sometimes called the “Mongolia of France.”
Volcanic landscapes and hiking trails
Four major long-distance hiking trails cross the Volcans d’Auvergne: GR 4, GR 441, GR 400 and GR 30. The GR 30 is 198 kilometers long and passes through Le Mont-Dore, the Chaîne des Puys and the Cézallier. It is considered a nine-day hike and includes Lac Chambon, which is equipped for swimming and water sports. This makes it possible to combine a longer route with a stay by a lake, without treating the different landscape sections as a single stage.
In Le Mont-Dore, local hiking trails take between one and six hours. They can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. This time frame offers a practical guide for planning a day and contrasts with a multi-day long-distance hike. The Romanesque Basilica of Orcival, the medieval Château de Murol and the Renaissance heritage in the streets of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise add to the region’s cultural attractions. The thermal baths of Mont-Dore and the surrounding villages are associated with Gallo-Roman and Belle Époque heritage.
Experience cheese and discover regional stops
The Route des Fromages AOP d’Auvergne is a flexible agritourism circuit focused on cheesemaking. Its 36 stops are spread across Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme. Visits include a tasting and the opportunity to buy cheese directly at the production site. Depending on the participating stop, you may also be able to watch milking, feed calves or take part in cheesemaking; specific visitor activities may vary.
The route’s open format leaves room to include individual production sites in your own travel plans. Those especially interested in production will find it offers a different focus from the long-distance hiking trails or cultural sites.
Seasonal activities in Le Mont-Dore and La Stèle
In winter, activities in Le Mont-Dore include snowboarding, snowshoeing, downhill and cross-country skiing, snowscooting, freeriding and ice waterfalls. Outdoor activities also include a zipline, summer tobogganing, fatscoot descents, treetop adventures, trail running and via ferrata. The seasonal offerings give the trip a different focus depending on the time of year. The thermal baths in Le Mont-Dore are decorated in a Neo-Byzantine and Roman style and are listed as a historic monument.
The La Stèle Nordic area offers more than 90 kilometers of cross-country ski trails within the 250-kilometer Sancy Nordic area. There are also four circular trails and three connecting routes toward Charlannes, Chastreix and Capucin. Snow conditions and seasonal opening affect access, so it is advisable to check conditions before your visit.
Getting there and planning your trip
Auvergne Destination provides travel information for journeys by car, train and plane. To reach a Cézallier route, take the train from Clermont-Ferrand to Neussargues, then the bus to Landeyrat. The return journey is by train from Murat to Clermont-Ferrand. Check connections before you travel to make sure this specific itinerary fits your plans.
Timing can also help you choose a focus for your trip: the GR 30 hike, described as a nine-day route, differs considerably from the one- to six-hour local hiking trails in Le Mont-Dore. Cheese experiences and seasonal activities offer other themes for your stay. This lets you tailor your hotel search to the experiences that interest you most in Auvergne.
