Aisey-Sur-Seine can be explored through its architectural history and a scenic route. The Château des Ducs de Bourgogne represents a site that was probably medieval, while the Château de Tavannes and the parish church of Saint-Genest reflect later building phases tied to specific historical dates. The Circuit des Fermes draws attention to plateaus, farm tracks and limestone walls. If you are looking for a hotel in Aisey-Sur-Seine, these different highlights may influence your choice of stay: would you mainly like to discover historic buildings, or also include a route through the countryside in your plans?

Châteaux with traces of different periods

The Château des Ducs de Bourgogne was probably built in the 12th century, flanked by four towers and surrounded by a double moat. Its overgrown remains are located in La Barque in Aisey-Sur-Seine; the base of the northeastern tower is still visible. Tours of the remains are available to groups by prior appointment with the Office de Tourisme du Châtillonnais. At this château, the historic site contrasts sharply with the remains visible today.

Château de Tavannes: construction and preservation

The Château de Tavannes was built between 1735 and 1744 for Charles de Saulx, Vicomte de Tavannes. It also preserves a stair tower from the 15th or 16th century. Compared with the Château des Ducs, which was probably built in the 12th century, the main building at Tavannes dates from a later period, while its stair tower preserves an earlier building phase. By decree of 20 May 1988, the château's façades and roofs, the façades and roofs of the two entrance pavilions, two gates with their pillars, and two access staircases to the château were listed as a Monument historique. For context, it is worth considering the château's construction period, the older stair tower, and the scope of protection for the listed features separately.

The parish church of Saint-Genest

The parish church of Saint-Genest adds an older ecclesiastical history to the story of the châteaux. It was built on the site of an earlier church founded by Flavigny Abbey. The building followed a design by Henri Monniot; final acceptance took place on 7 December 1880. Thus, the church site brings together the history of an earlier predecessor building and a 19th-century building project. This differs from the architectural history of the Château de Tavannes, where an older feature survives within a château built later.

The Circuit des Fermes through the countryside

The Circuit des Fermes passes through Chemin-d'Aisey, Aisey-Sur-Seine and Semond. The route crosses plateaus and farm tracks and passes limestone walls that testify to the former pastoral use of the paths. In this way, the route description connects three named municipalities with specific landscape features and traces of historical land use. If you are interested in these traces in the landscape as well as the buildings, the Circuit des Fermes offers a focus of its own. Check the current route before your trip, as routes may change.
