Discover Flagey-Échézeaux
Accommodation in Flagey-Échézeaux
Flagey-Échézeaux brings together vineyards, the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne and a distinctive village history. The Échezeaux vineyard lies above the village and on the plain between Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits. Flagey-Échézeaux is a featured stop along the route. The area can also be explored on foot along the rows of vines in its named Grands Crus.
Explore vineyards and Climats on foot
Exploring Flagey-Échézeaux on foot lets you walk alongside the vine rows of Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux. Paths through the vineyards offer a chance to learn about the significance of the Climats de Bourgogne, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The path draws your gaze to the vine rows, while the Climats provide the cultural context. In this way, landscape and World Heritage themes meet without being one and the same.
A history of winemaking in several stages
Échezeaux and Grands-Echezeaux have been AOC Grands Crus since 31 July 1937. Their history goes back to endowments made to Cîteaux Abbey in the 12th and 13th centuries. The name of the village is also connected with the Grand Cru Échezeaux: it lies in the commune of Flagey, which took the name Flagey-Echézeaux in 1886. These dates refer to different historical contexts. The endowments point to the early history of the Grands Crus, 1886 to the naming of the village, and 1937 to their AOC status. The history of winemaking here therefore encompasses both a connection to Cîteaux Abbey and specific dates in the development of the appellation and the village name.
Architecture and village character
Stone houses, former wine cellars and quiet lanes shape Flagey-Échézeaux’s architecture, typical of the Côte de Nuits. The former wine cellars are part of the village’s traditional character; they are a distinct feature from today’s vineyards and the history of the Grands Crus. The Église de l’Assomption dates from the 15th century and was partly altered and rebuilt in 1870. A restored washhouse is also among the village’s historic features; its windows are bricked up. Together, these buildings reveal different aspects of local history, from the village church to the washhouse.
Grands Crus and winery
The Grands Crus associated with Flagey-Échézeaux, Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux, are made from Pinot Noir. The family winery Coquard Loison Fleurot also offers 13 Côte de Nuits appellations and has been in business for five generations. The Pinot Noir reference applies to the two Grands Crus, while the 13 appellations describe the winery’s offering. Coquard Loison Fleurot is also associated with cellar tours and Burgundy wine tastings at wineries and wine merchants. Before visiting, check whether an appointment is possible and when.
