Recey-sur-Ource: Moorland, Hiking Trails and Heritage
Accommodation in Recey-sur-Ource
Recey-sur-Ource combines nature destinations, hiking trails and historic buildings with a market held year-round and local produce. The Ource flows through the town. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing the short nature trail at the Marais des Brosses from the longer hikes, and keeping seasonal visiting opportunities in mind as well.
Moorland and Nature Trail
The Marais des Brosses is located in the municipal forest of Recey-sur-Ource, in the core zone of the Parc national de forĂŞts. The tufa moor offers an insight into the local flora. The 250-metre nature trail runs for half its length along a low boardwalk on stilts. This makes it possible to experience both the moorland and the boardwalk section over a short distance.
A description from July 2023 mentions the renovation of the trail. It was intended to make public access safer and protect the moor from damage. If you plan to take the trail, check local conditions before setting out.
Hikes and Walks
The Circuit de Montot starts in Recey-sur-Ource, is nine kilometres long and is rated easy. It is a forest hiking trail in the Parc national de forĂŞts. The Circuit de Lugny also starts in Recey-sur-Ource: it is eleven kilometres long and is likewise rated easy. The route is associated with the former Chartreuse de Lugny and has a monastic atmosphere.
At nine rather than eleven kilometres, the Circuit de Montot is the shorter of the two routes; both have the same easy rating. This makes route length a clear point of difference when planning. For a short walk, the Tuffmoor of Vaulemain is another option. The Promenade de la Carrière leads to the Trou de Bazon spring, also called Trou de Bazou.
Architectural History and Heritage
The Maison forte de Beaufremont, also called the Tour de Beaufremont, is a fortified house. A dendrochronological study dates the likely felling year of the building timber to 1305. This date refers to the timber, not to a definitively established construction year. The roof, covered predominantly with laves, and its remarkable structure are further architectural features; dendrochronology dates the structure to the beginning of the 14th century.
The Église Saint-Rémi dates from the 13th century. The Église Saint-Rémy contains a marble high altar from the Chartreuse de Lugny, as well as a polychrome Pietà . The Lavoir is also among the local buildings; its roof is covered with limestone. Together, these different building types offer ways to explore the town’s history and architecture.
Market and Produce from Recey-sur-Ource
The Marché de Recey-sur-Ource is held year-round on the Place de Silenrieux. Stalls offer dairy products, including sheep’s cheese, fresh and dried fruit and vegetables, as well as savoury foods. The selection may vary from one market day to the next; if you are planning a visit specifically for the market, check local information before your trip.
La Safranerie Templière produces saffron, purple garlic and grey shallots on the former hemp fields of Recey-sur-Ource, on the edge of the Grouème. The products are available directly at the processing site, although availability may vary seasonally. Confirm sales before your visit. In October, during flowering and harvest, the farm offers visits by individual or group appointment. Arrange a visit and confirm availability before you arrive.
You can shape your stay around the themes that interest you: a short loop through the tufa moor, one of the two hikes of different lengths, buildings with varied historical connections, or a visit to the market. A visit to the saffron farm is limited to October and requires an appointment in advance.
