Discover Rochefort-sur-Brévon
Accommodation in Rochefort-sur-Brévon
Rochefort-sur-Brévon lies in the heart of the Parc national de forêts. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, you can choose your destination based on two distinct themes: the wooded landscape and the area’s architectural history. The Vallée du Brevon circular trail, the Château de Rochefort and the Église de la Nativité each offer a different focus.
Forest and viewpoints in the Parc national de forêts
The Vallée du Brevon circular trail is mostly wooded. Along the way, viewpoints offer views of the villages of Beaulieu and Rochefort-sur-Brevon, as well as the Brévon Valley. Both the villages and the valley are therefore part of the route’s described landscape. It is worth checking current trail conditions before setting out.
On the circular trail, you can discover a variety of tree species, remarkable trees and wildlife. The animals mentioned include deer, roe deer, wild boar and herons. Wildlife sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed. The route therefore offers a range of nature experiences, from the forest and its trees to the possibility of spotting animals.
Château history and forges
The Château de Rochefort is a château in the Neo-Renaissance style. It was built in 1888 on a rocky spur above the Brévon Valley. Its style and location are two specific clues to understanding the building: one concerns its architecture, the other its position above the valley.
The history of the original Château de Rochefort goes back further. It belonged to the Sire du Puiset and is documented from 1235. After a fire in 1730, only the dovecote and the fortification walls remained. An addition to Les châteaux de Rochefort in 1896 is recorded, comprising stables, a terraced garden, an orangery and a park. These dates distinguish the early history of the original château from the later building and garden additions.
The two forges are also in different states: the lower forge, the Forge du Bas, is in the château park and has been restored; the upper forge, the Forge du Haut, is currently being restored. If you are particularly interested in the upper forge, ask about the current restoration status before visiting.
The Romanesque Église de la Nativité
The Église de la Nativité is a rural Romanesque place of worship. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross, with a transept that is only suggested. The interior comprises a single nave and a narrower choir with a pointed barrel vault. These features describe both the building’s overall form and the layout of its spaces.
As another historical detail, the church has eight consecration crosses dating from the 17th century. Its dedication to Saint Maur is rare in the Côte-d'Or département and could point to an area that once belonged to a monastery. This connection remains a possible historical interpretation. The church thus combines a clearly described architectural form with dated details and a cautiously worded historical interpretation.
Travel by TGV
Montbard station is the TGV rail gateway to Rochefort-sur-Brévon. Four TGV stops in each direction are served there daily. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current timetable before departure.
For a choice between nature and heritage, Rochefort-sur-Brévon offers clear distinctions: the circular trail leads through wooded landscapes and to viewpoints, while the château and church bring architectural history and historical details to the fore. You can first decide which of these aspects of the area you would like to shape your stay.
