Saint-Marc-Sur-Seine offers several distinct themes to consider when planning a stay: the “Cascades et sources tufeuses de Saint-Marc-sur-Seine” area, the parish church, and traces of earlier work in the mill and forge. There is also the Sentier des Châteaux, which follows a white trail along the Seine Valley to the village.

Nature and the Character of the Village

The “Cascades et sources tufeuses de Saint-Marc-sur-Seine” area was designated the Côte-d’Or Department’s eleventh Espace naturel sensible on November 8, 2021. Its name refers to cascades and tufa springs; this clearly defined nature theme complements the village’s architectural and industrial history. This designation offers a distinct starting point when deciding which aspects of the destination matter most to you, alongside the parish church and historic workplaces.

The Parish Church and Its Architectural History

Saint-Marc Parish Church was built at the end of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century. The year 1741 is engraved on the sacristy door, and the nave was remodeled in the second half of the 18th century. The early construction period, the specific date, and the later alteration refer to different points in time, so the building’s history cannot be reduced to a single date. The parish church also houses a limestone statuette of a holy monk from the second half of the 16th century. It adds a specific object, with its own material, subject and date, to the architectural details.

Traces of Work and Technology

The history of the village also includes the Maurice Mill. It had been operating since the beginning of the 19th century and was one of the last active family mills in the Côte-d’Or Department; it is no longer in operation today. A major forge operated from 1688 in the hamlet of Chenecières, which belongs to Saint-Marc-Sur-Seine. It stood on the site of a mill known since the 15th century. The village’s history thus links two historic uses of the same site. In a laboratory beside the workers’ houses in Chenecières, Louis Cailletet conducted experiments on the liquefaction of gases and artificial refrigeration. An old, round brick chimney in Chenecières recalls the site’s industrial past.

Other architectural traces are also part of the village: Saint-Marc-Sur-Seine preserves the remains of a 17th-century monastic complex, including a dovecote roofed with lava stone. The partly subterranean washhouse has a protective wrought-iron railing. The monastic remains and dovecote thus stand alongside a building with a different character, whose partly subterranean design is a distinctive architectural feature.

Finding Your Way Along the Sentier des Châteaux

The Sentier des Châteaux follows a white trail along the Seine Valley to Saint-Marc-Sur-Seine. The route’s landmarks are specific: at the trail, cross the bridge, then immediately turn right onto a footpath. After crossing the D971, continue uphill to the village church, then carry on along the trail. The bridge, turnoff, road crossing and uphill stretch help you follow the route section by section. The church is both a historic building and a waypoint on the route.
