Vianges offers two distinct cultural and historical highlights: the Château de Vianges and the Church of Saint-Georges. At the château, the focus is on its architectural form, enclosing wall, and the history of individual structural features. The church, in turn, combines a Neo-Gothic portal with a stained-glass window depicting a specific scene. The landscape around L’Auxois des Buttes and the wooded valleys along the Liernais stream also adds to the appeal. When choosing a destination based on your interests, you can consider architectural history, religious art, and landscape as separate themes for planning your trip.

Château de Vianges: Architectural Form and Historic Features

The Château de Vianges originally dates from the 14th century and was later altered. Its rectangular layout comprises two storeys and an attic level. Two pavilions and an external, four-sided stair tower complete the building’s design. This gives you several ways to appreciate its architecture: its main form, the divisions created by the pavilions, and the external tower.

The château also includes a dovecote and an enclosing wall with two gateways. One of the gateways is flanked by two round, single-storey towers with loopholes. The wall extends the view beyond the main building to its enclosure. The gateway and flanking towers create a different architectural accent from the château’s rectangular form.

By decree of February 22, 1980, the façades and roofs, the interior staircase, the gate of the former enclosure, and the dovecote were listed as historic monuments. The date of listing should be distinguished from the building’s history: the château dates back to the 14th century, while the decree applies to the features listed above.

Church of Saint-Georges: Portal, Window, and Visiting

The Church of Saint-Georges is believed to date from the 17th century. The Neo-Gothic portal bears a coat of arms with the year 1624. Inside, a stained-glass window depicts Saint George defeating the dragon. The church thus offers an architectural feature at the portal and a figurative scene in the window. The year belongs to the coat of arms, while the church’s dating continues to be presented as an attribution to the 17th century.

Landscape and Hiking Plans

Vianges is part of the L’Auxois des Buttes landscape. The Church of Saint-Georges is set amid green, wooded valleys along the banks of the Liernais stream. The landscape name places Vianges in a regional context, while the stream and valleys give a more specific sense of the landscape around the church. If you would like to focus more on the natural surroundings, this offers a distinct theme alongside architectural history.

A hiking trail is less than 500 metres from the Château de Vianges. If you would like to include it in your plans, check the current route locally.
