Villy-Le-Moutier can be explored from several perspectives: through the early Romanesque Church of Saint-Blaise-et-Saint-Révérien, the Meuzin river landscape and Hiking Trail No. 7. You can focus on architectural and religious history, or include a circular trail through two villages in your plans.

A church with several building phases

The Church of Saint-Blaise-et-Saint-Révérien is early Romanesque and may date from the 10th or 11th century. Its building history also extends into later centuries: the nave was renovated in the 15th or 16th century. Among other changes, the present-day ceiling and two large windows were added at that time. The possible early dating and the later alterations give the church different historical layers; the building therefore cannot be reduced to a single century.

Its religious significance is also part of its history. A portion of the skull of Saint Révérien is kept in the church in a gilded wooden reliquary. This brings two different aspects together: the development of the church building and the veneration of the saint. If you are interested in sacred architecture, the combination of its building phases and the relic offers a specific focus for exploring the site.

The Meuzin, woodland and historic structures

The Meuzin flows through the Villy-le-Moutier area from north to south. The commune's wooded areas include the Bois du Biez des Vernes. The river and the forest thus offer different landscape features: one runs north to south through the area, while the other represents the wooded parts of the commune.

A stone mill belonging to Ferme Joigneault stands on the Meuzin. Another historic structure on the river is a stone washhouse. Its supporting walls extend into the Meuzin; inside, there was a fireplace where washerwomen could warm themselves and boil their laundry. The fireplace illustrates a practical aspect of earlier washing work: it was used both for warmth and for boiling laundry.

The historic heritage also includes a paved ford crossing or a paved glacis dating from the Gallo-Roman period. It lies along the route of a Roman road that connected Autun with Besançon. Together with the church, mill and washhouse, this reference broadens the view from individual buildings to the region's earlier transport history.

Circular trail and directions

Hiking Trail No. 7 starts at the Church of Saint-Blaise-et-Saint-Révérien. The easy circular trail is approximately 7 km long and passes through the villages of Villy-le-Moutier and Villy le Brûlé, allowing you to experience the surrounding landscape as well. Its approximate length and easy rating make it a clearly defined hiking option. Check the trail signs and conditions locally.

The RD 20 crosses the area from northeast to west via Longvay and connects westward to the commune of Beaune. This road's direction helps you find your bearings on the map. When planning, you can keep the different points of interest in mind separately: the church and its building history, the historic structures on the Meuzin, or the walk through two villages and the countryside.

If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can choose where to stay based on these interests. For a specific choice, you can then consider your travel dates and the details of each offer.
