Glux-En-Glenne is associated with the archaeological site of Bibracte, the Sources de l’Yonne and several named hiking trails. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you want to explore archaeological remains, hike through moorland and forest, or choose a longer route in the Morvan. The trails offer concrete points of comparison: length, waymarking, landscape and historical connections. This makes it possible to plan your stay around a theme without treating different routes as if they were the same.

Bibracte and archaeological remains

The Oppidum du Mont-Beuvray, also known as the Oppidum de Bibracte, is also located within the municipality of Glux-En-Glenne. It was designated a historic monument by decree on September 25, 1984. The archaeological site on Mont Beuvray is freely accessible year-round. Check the current seasonal opening hours of the museum separately.

The Sources de l’Yonne also have an archaeological history: three small Gallo-Roman temples and coins of the Haedui, minted before the Roman conquest, were discovered in a large enclosed area. The springs were visited as early as antiquity. If you are interested in present-day archaeological research as well as the excavation sites, the European Archaeological Centre in Glux-En-Glenne offers another point of interest. Researchers and students come together there to advance knowledge of Bibracte and research into the Iron Age.

The centre is also part of the Le Sud Morvan contemporary architecture route. The ancillary buildings included in the route comprise accommodation and a restaurant for researchers. These facilities are intended for researchers and are not a general indication of accommodation for travellers.

Trails to the Sources de l’Yonne and through the Morvan

The trail to the Sources de l’Yonne starts at the car park in the hamlet of Port des Lamberts, beyond the RD300 bridge over the Yonne. From there, the trail crosses a peat bog on a wooden boardwalk, then continues through a beech forest to the spring. The sequence of bog, boardwalk and forest gives this hike a different character from trails that focus mainly on archaeological remains or viewpoints.

For a longer excursion, the multi-day Vers les bois du Folin route runs for 39 kilometres through Glux-En-Glenne. It passes through the archaeological site of Bibracte, the designated site of the Sources de l’Yonne and Mont Préneley, and continues to Haut Folin, the highest peak in Burgundy. This route therefore links several named places and landscapes in a multi-day hike.

On Mont Beuvray, three circular trails differ in length and theme. The 6-kilometre Centre-ville de Bibracte trail, marked in green, gives an overview of the main remains of the Gallic town, with explanatory panels along the way. The 3-kilometre Chemin de maraude, marked in yellow, offers panoramic views across the Morvan. The 5.2-kilometre Tour des remparts, marked in pink, follows the former Gallic fortification and passes through a deep forest. These details can help you choose between an overview of the town, scenic views and a trail linked to the former fortification.

Compare highland trails and routes

The two trail-running routes from Glux-En-Glenne also have different emphases. Boucle n°2 runs at elevations between 630 and 760 metres, includes 200 metres of ascent and offers open views across the Morvan highlands. Boucle n°3 leads to a viewpoint at an elevation of 815 metres; from there, views may extend as far as Mont Blanc. The À la conquête de Bibracte circuit is also included in the Morvan trail centre in Glux-En-Glenne. Check its route details separately before setting out.

Plan your hotel stay around the focus of your trip

If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Glux-En-Glenne, it helps to first decide on the focus of your stay. For Bibracte and the archaeological sites, the main attractions are the archaeological site, the centre and the remains at the Sources de l’Yonne. For hiking days, the different circular trails, the walk to the springs and the multi-day Vers les bois du Folin route are useful starting points for planning. Compare the stated distances and content of each route rather than inferring a connection to another route from a trail description.
