La-Charité-Sur-Loire: Priory and Loire
Accommodation in La-Charité-Sur-Loire
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in La Charité-sur-Loire, the town’s highlights can help you plan your trip: the priory and its history, culture centred on words, the Val de Loire National Nature Reserve, and activities on foot, by bike or on the river.
Priory, pilgrimage route and town history
The priory of La Charité-sur-Loire was founded in 1059 by the powerful Cluniac Order. It formed the historic centre around which the town developed. The Church of Notre-Dame is also part of the town’s religious and historical heritage: since 1998, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France, on the Via Lemovicensis through Vézelay. The Ancien domaine prioral is partly listed as a historic monument and partly classified as a historic monument. The stone bridge to La Charité-sur-Loire was built in 1520.
The priory is open free of charge all year round. From May to October, it is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; from November to April, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check seasonal opening hours before your trip. Guided tours of the priory and town are available year-round, including themed walks through the Loire district and the Hôtelleries and Saint-Jacques districts. Individual tour dates may vary. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the architectural complex with an introduction to different parts of the town.
Culture centred on words
The Cité du Mot develops a cultural project centred on words in all their forms, at the priory and throughout La Charité-sur-Loire. It holds the “Centre Culturel de Rencontre” label awarded by the French Ministry of Culture. While the themed tours focus on specific districts, this cultural project explores words as its subject. Another way to discover the town is Déambullassons, a location-based audio trail: sounds are triggered automatically when visitors enter sound zones identified through geolocation. This lets you choose between a guided walk through the town and a sound-based trail when planning your visit.
The Loire and the nature reserve
The Val de Loire National Nature Reserve also includes the municipality of La Charité-sur-Loire. It covers 1,454 hectares along a 19-kilometre river corridor. The protected area offers themed events throughout the year and three educational trails. Dates for individual activities may vary, so check in advance which events fall within your travel dates. The educational trails and events offer different ways to explore the area; neither format promises the same experience as the other.
Cycling routes and pilgrimage route
There are six signposted cycling routes near La Charité-sur-Loire, with varying levels of difficulty. They range from 18 to around 30 kilometres in length. You can consider distance and difficulty as separate criteria when making your choice; check current route conditions before setting out, as they may change. The Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela is a separate route that passes through La Charité-sur-Loire. Pilgrims can stop here to rest before continuing to Bourges.
Market and Loire boat trip
A market is held on Place du Général de Gaulle on Saturdays. Traders there include fruit and vegetable, fish, wine, flower, cheese and poultry sellers. The selection may vary by date; check the market hours and produce available for your planned visit. On the river, the traditional Loire gabarre La Mignonette offers boat trips from La Charité-sur-Loire. Sailing days and availability may vary, so it is worth checking the available trips for your stay.
