Discover Menou: Chapels, History and Landscapes
Accommodation in Menou
Menou brings together traces of architectural history and a landscape of forests and expansive open spaces. Chapels, a church and a château are cultural landmarks; the surrounding countryside is suited to hiking, cycling and mountain biking. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose different focuses: historic buildings or outdoor activities.
Chapels and ecclesiastical architecture
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes-de-Tête-Ronde was built in 1872 in the Neo-Romanesque style, following a vow. It has been protected as a listed historic monument since 21 March 1994. The two dates mark different stages: 1872 is the year it was built, while 1994 marks its later listing. This makes it easy to distinguish the building’s history from its protected status.
The Chapelle de TĂŞte Ronde offers views of the Nivernais countryside, and there is an information board on site. The view and the board provide two different ways to get your bearings. If you plan to stop here, check local conditions in advance.
The Église Saint-Siméon was built in the 13th century on the site of the former fief of Nanvignes. Inside the church is the seigneurial chapel dedicated to Saint Hubert. Grave slabs and inscriptions commemorating the Menou and Damas-Cruz families have been preserved there. This brings together the building’s medieval origins, a chapel with its own dedication and the names of two families. The church is usually closed; the town hall can provide information. If you are considering a visit, check with them in advance.
The château: history and visiting conditions
The Château de Menou is privately owned and closed to visitors. The château building at the Domaine du château de Menou was constructed between 1672 and 1684 to plans by architect Barthélémy Le Blanc. Parts of the estate are listed as historic monuments, while others are classified; this protection applies to parts of the estate, not the Domaine as a whole. The construction dates and the architect’s name provide context for its origins, while the listing and classification relate to its heritage protection.
Landscapes and activities
Menou’s local landscape is characterised by forests and expansive open spaces. Suitable outdoor activities include hiking, cycling and mountain biking. The options range from walking to two different types of cycling. When planning, you can start by considering which way of getting around suits you. Menou also has the “Circuit du château – Menou” walking route. Check the latest route information if you plan to include it in your itinerary.
Until 31 December 2026, Les Ânes de Menou offers donkey treks. The routes pass through the forest, the countryside or both, and are available with or without a picnic. Check availability before your trip. This lets you consider a donkey trek as a separate activity option, distinct from the hiking and cycling mentioned more generally.
The book-sharing cabin in Menou is open to everyone. Books can be dropped off and borrowed without registration, an appointment or a fee. If you enjoy reading, you can easily leave or borrow books.
