Teigny: Church, Cross and Fountains
Accommodation in Teigny
Teigny stretches through the Armance valley, from Rue Barillot in the west to Rue d’Amont in the northeast. The village’s defining landmarks include the Église Saint-Nazaire-Saint-Celse, the Croix de Teigny and several structures associated with springs and fountains. They reveal different aspects of the village: sacred architecture, a monument at a road junction and waterworks, each with its own design.
The church and its baptismal fonts
The Église Saint-Nazaire-Saint-Celse has a Latin-cross floor plan. The nave contains baptismal fonts made of Tonnerre stone from the Yonne department. They are surrounded by a frame of oak boards with moulded outer faces, alternating with turned rods. These rods may be made of walnut. The baptismal fonts thus combine the stone material with a carefully described wooden frame as distinct design features.
The Croix de Teigny and the Pierre des morts
The Croix de Teigny is a mission and jubilee cross dating from 1865. It stands at the junction of the D42, Rue d’Amont and a local road. The Pierre des morts de Teigny stands in front of the Croix de Teigny, also at this junction. Together, the two monuments form a clear landmark, while the church, with its cross-shaped floor plan, offers another perspective on the village’s architectural history.
Springs, fountains and watercourses
Along the village street beside the Armance, the Source de Teigny feeds a small, semicircular stone basin. Separate from this is the Fontaine-Abreuvoir-Lavoir de Teigny: a spring behind the structure supplies its wash basin. The basin’s overflow feeds a livestock watering trough with two basins at the front. The entire structure and the paving in front of it have been restored. The sequence of spring, wash basin and watering trough makes it easy to describe this multi-part structure without confusing it with the small basin at the Source de Teigny.
Fountains also form part of the village scene in the church square. They were built over an artesian well. Teigny therefore has several distinct water features: the semicircular basin beside the village street, the combined wash basin and watering trough, and the fountains in the church square.
The valley and the cycling route
The settlement’s extent along the Armance valley can be traced by its named endpoints: Rue Barillot lies to the west, and Rue d’Amont to the northeast. The Saint-Jacques à vélo V56 cycling route runs from Vézelay to Varzy and passes through Teigny on the D119. If you plan to ride this route, check the route details before setting off.
For your trip planning, Teigny offers several clearly distinct points of interest: the church’s floor plan and the features of its baptismal fonts, the monuments at the junction, and the different types of waterworks. The cycling route adds a specific route through Teigny to this local information.
